I couldn't figure out how to search for this info... so here goes. Sorry if it is a FAQ.
How long does it typically take (from start to finish) for the creation of a Corvette? For example say it begins to be built first thing Monday morning.
Does the BG assembly plant have one line, or more?
Haven't experienced the thrill of a museum and plant tour, yet... Just curious as can be.
My guide on the Buyer's Tour told me it takes about 36 hours in total. The chassis starts out on the line and the body is assembled on it. The panels are painted before they are asembled on the car. He told me that the paint shop works at night.
This probably explains some of the color difference in certain cars body panels. I know my left rear quarter is noticeably lighter than my decklid, but matches the passenger door and front fender. Yet, the decklid matches matches the left quarter panel perfectly. I noticed these color variations on my car and others as they were going down the line and asked about it. The explanation was that the panels are painted seperately, a side effect of the manufacturing process.
The drive train is assembled on another line and the two meet along the way at what they call the marriage point.
The Buyer's Tour is geared to start at the marriage point and it finishes after the car comes off the line, goes on the dyno, and then gets the water test.
It usually takes about four hours from the marriage point to the end of the tour, but this time can be longer if the line stops for a break, lunch, or any other reason.
The tour is awesome. The employees you encounter are all great, and take a lot of pride in what they do.
Kevin T emailed me that my car would go on line on a Thursday and come off on Friday, so from that I surmise it takes a little less than two days on the assembly line from start to finish. Of course, that does not include the time to get all of the subassemblies ready.

That is what I was told on the NCM delivery. The part about the line workers is absolutely true. Very friendly and professional crew.
