If you run an air purifier in your garage, it will destroy rubber. I found this on another board: http://bimmer.roadfly.com/bmw/forums/z3/8066673-1.html

WOW... that was interesting. I don't use one when I store my cars. I just make sure the garage has air circulation and never worried about trying to clean the air........ If I can breath that air so can my vette!

after checking out this site, it is apparent to me that the tires in these photos have more problems than ANYTHING that could be possiably be caused by an "air purifier". trust me on this. the amount of "ozone" produced by these systems is very, very, very minimal, keeping in mind that ozone is VERY harmfull to humans. if you want to do anything in your garage run a small fan on low or dehumidifer. air purifiers do not cause these problems.

I agree, the cracks that are in these tires are not caused by the air purifier, but the effects on ozone on humans are true. Plus, I believe the articles on the effects of ozone are referring to effects on organic compounds. Tire rubber is mostly synthetic, so I don't believe this caused the tire issues shown.

I have had rubber handles crack on tools over the winter without any air purifier running. If you're in the midwest, the winters are very dry here.

If anything in the Garage you might need a humidifier in winter, if the garage is heated.

Ionic Breeze purifiers were rated as pure crap for cleaning your air. That plus they produced ozone due to the electro-static process they use.

After consumer reports and a few others released reports about the harmful levels of ozone produced, Sharper image sued. (It is one of their biggest sellers) The case was thrown out if I remember correctly.

Now you see ionic breeze advertising their new "Prem-Air" (or is it "Perm-Air?") system add on which turns harmful ozone into breathable air. It's nice how they don't tell you it's their machine that produces the ozone in the first place.

While the Navy may use ion exchange for air cleaning on subs, it is by far and away a more complex system with many more levels of filtering.
