I get a free oil change at the chevy dealer I got my c6 vette from. What brand oil do they use? Is it some no-name bulk oil barrels? Or do they acutally use mobil-1 oil for corvettes? If they don't use mobil 1 can I buy mobil-1 from a store and take it with me to the dealer and have them use it? thanks

I would think they would have to or else they would be liable for possibly voiding your warranty.

I've had two oil changes done at my local GM dealer...good friendly service, and they used Mobil 1.

Using oils other than Mobil 1 won't void your warranty. Car manufacturers, by law, cannot require a SPECIFIC brand of anything for routine service unless they provide it free of charge. You can use whatever oil you want.

If it meets the GM4718 spec and the Owners Manual spec (5W-30).

True. Since I use Amsoil in ALL of my IC engine driven machines, I simply took 6 quarts of Amsoil 5W30 and the proper Amsoil filter with me when I had the oil changed. I stood at the Service Desk while the Tech did the change and watched him like a hawk. He was very careful and did an excellent job. Cost me less than $15 for the service (+ my cost for the Amsoil and filter)

Who knows what they use. I have seen the Car Quest parts truck delivering parts to the GM dealership and they sure ain't GM parts.

Since they are giving you a free oil change, they may charge you for the difference in price for mobil 1. I also was given a free oil change at the dealership I bought mine from, but that was for regular oil. I just brought in mobil 1 and the filter for them.

Mine always uses Mobil-1. They use bottles right out of a new carton, and it is easy to watch them do it.

You should look for this on the oil container, and
use only those oils that are identified as meeting
GM Standard GM4718M and have the starburst symbol
on the front of the oil container.
Your vehicle’s engine is filled at the factory with a
Mobil 1® synthetic oil, which meets all requirements for
your vehicle.
Substitute Engine Oil: When adding oil to maintain
engine oil level, oil meeting GM Standard GM4718M
may not be available. You can add substitute oil
designated SAE 5W-30 with the starburst symbol at all
temperatures. Substitute oil not meeting GM Standard
GM4718M should not be used for an oil change.

Above is from 5-23 of the owners manual. I would like to think that any dealer chainging oil would follow the GM standard. However, after reading stories about dealer service I would not assume anything.

And I've read reports of dealers using conventional oil in GM cars requiring an oil meeting GM Standard 4718M (which now includes cars such as the GTO and CTS-V). The vast majority of dealers will know to use the proper oil, but since there are some that don't, it is worth asking...
