Default Clutch...

I am potentially in the market for a C6 coupe and test drove today a c6 vert with the z51 package. Great car from fit/finish, ride, handling and all the creature comforts etc!! My only issue is the clutch WAY TOO SOFT for my liking...took away the sports car feel IMO. Granted, I am coming from an 03 Mustang Cobra that has a notoriously heavy clutch. I recently swapped that out for something lighter feeling, but the vette clutch is crazy soft.

Have any of you upgraded your clutches with an aftermarket onei?? I'm assuming the aftermarket ones will be stiffer by default...if so, do you like the new clutch?? What brand and how much??

The clutch is the one big kicker in me purchasing one...

I came from a LS1 SS Camaro with a Ram Powergrip HD which was...needless to say, very heavy; and honestly, I would prefer it this way (only with less chatter)...So far the clutch on this car has been the hardest thing for me to adjust to, but it's certainly not something to not buy the car over. Once you get used to it, You'll either forget about the heavy clutch, or you'll just end up putting a heavier clutch in it. I do wish there was more feedback in the pedal though...I can tell ya that I am certainly not regretting buying the C6 due to the clutch

Thanks for the input! Which car was faster...the SS or your new Vette??

Ha...well, I never really considered the SS to be fast...I only had a lid and full exhaust. It was alright...but then, a few days after buying my vette, I finally got away from the city and really laid into it on the on-ramp and you see the fenders raise up and holy crap...I thought to myself " what else could you expect from a completely stock vehicle"...and "if it does this well stock, how would it respond to a few mods?!" also: I wonder what the new ZO6 owners thought the first time they pressed on theirs a bit!

I should add in the SS vs. C6 comparo...The C6 feels a million pounds lighter than the SS...the SS always seemed like it was trying to run with a palette of bricks on it's back...the C6 just feels like it wants to develop wings at some point in it's life...It's a fun car to have.

You throw a little NOS into those SS's and they tear it up!!!! I initially wanted a GT500 but the crazy dealer markups and heavy weight have turned me off....after sitting in both vehicles...it's not even close and I'm not a chevy guy!!

So is the c6 that good, or the gt500 that bad? I've never been a ford guy, so i am certainly biased, but I think that there is too much hype around the gt500, and not enough "giddie-up" to back it up. I think I read a magazine article where the C6 vastly out-performed the gt500 in all areas...but I guess that can be expected when it is sports car vs. pony car straight up. I'd like to drive one to see how they are...but they weigh like 3800lbs or something right? you'll definitely feel that in the corners!

I didn't drive the GT500 (sat in one), but my buddy who sales them said they are very nose heavy and can't compare to my modded 03 Cobra. I just can't imagine that Ford built such a heavy car...I guess that's why they had to have it s/c'd. In just sitting in both vehicles...in the vette you feel one with the machine...in the GT500 you feel like you are sitting in a car.

I know these comparos sometimes don't give proper justice, and shouldn't be the basis on whether or not to buy something, but...

I had an 03 Cobra as well. I believe the difference is the C6 has a hydraulic clutch.

IMO the C6 feel is a million times better.

My modded cobra @ 461HP & 459TQ was not as fast as my modded corvette @ 381HP & 380TQ.

It's a proven fact. Are you fammilar with SVTperformance? if so, check for my username on that forum. You'll find the proof. Or you can google my username.

If the clutch pedal isn't stiff enough, consider reducing the mechanical advantage of the pedal rather than replacing the clutch itself.

I'd start by removing the assist spring under the dashboard.

Check this out http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...an_rockets_vrt Look for the virtual road race between the Vette,Viper, and the GT500 pretty cool. And no the Vette did not win.

Yeah, not too many un-modded cobra's running around lol!! Very familiar with SVTP...3 yrs. and running. Do you regret getting rid of the cobra for the vette or have you not looked back since?? Sorry for all the questions, but I would be coming from the same vehicle more or less (100 or so hp lol!!).

Oh yeah, how do these babies tune...via handhelds or does it have to be done on a dyno??

Thanks,
Mick

Hey no problem, we're here to help. I absolutely do not regret getting rid of the cobra.

That's the thing, most people are concerned with Dyno HP #'s, they always forget about weight. Stock for Stock the underrated 390HP Terminator is not faster than C6 Vette. Over all the C6 is more efficient it's a hard car to beat.

They tune well, they are real conservative out the box. I got my tune from a tuner on a dyno to check the AF. I don't know if they have a handheld available for the 06 C6, last i checked they were working on a Predator hand held.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

coming from an 01 cobra i know exactly what you're talking about. the clutch in my cobra was very heavy! And I loved it! when i got y vette, t took me awile to get used to it. after 6 months, it still feels weird. I guess 5 years of driving my cobra can do that to you. anyway, its definitly nothing to deter you from buying a vette. as much as i miss my cobra sometimes, there is NO comparison. You guys that doubt the performance of the gt500, check out SVTperformance, been there for over 6 years now and most know what they're talking about.Great pkge out of the box, but very easily odified to run very fast.

I was after a GT500, but the markup turned me off big time. I really love the interior comfort wise and the ride of the new vette.
