I had so much fun today..I've hardly used my paddle shifters on my 07 A6 Z51 because I always used "S" mode without paddles because it was quicker for straight line acceleration. Today I decided to switch to the paddles because I was on a curvy winding road and my car has finally been broaken in enough for some WOT. I was coming into a curve and downshifted to 2nd and hit the gas..my rear end slid out sideways and I corrected it and gave it more gas and slid through the curve..the traction control got her back straight though....but it sure was fun. I didn't realize how much power this car had..especially when u lock the transmission up with the paddles engaged.
Anyway to get to the point...Does anyone know if they raised the maximum RPMs allowed for 2007 and if they will eventually allow for near max rpms like porsche's tiptronic auto? I've herd atleast for the 2006 A6 that that u have to upshift before or at 5800rpms. I was thinking if they continue to improve the paddleshift timing for near 0 delay and raise the RPMs allowed we could see the A6 outrun the best MN6 driver. LIke how the porsche's tiptronic automatic is faster than the manual.

In paddle mode, the car will allow you to run it right up against the redline fuel cutoff in every gear. What you may have heard about 5800 RPM is that's about the RPM where you need to hit the paddle for an upshift because if you wait longer, the car will hit the fuel cutoff rev limiter before the transmission shifts.
mine redlines just fine and if you miss the shift timing you will hit the rev limiter. This slows you dramatically between shifts. My timing is at just about 6k to hit the upshift.
thanks...I still believe S mode without paddles would be quicker for the drag strip....
Not from the data I have so far. In paddles you can hold the gear longer. The down side it it very easy to miss the shift, shift to early or hit the limiter. I still have not got a good run in whithout screwing up one of the shifts.

I picked up an 07 A6 last week and I have had the enjoyable privilege to put 300 miles on the car. Previous threads have bashed the 06 A6 for a delay when shifting. There is NO delay in the 07. In fact, it is the most fun I have ever had. The power is awesome. I can see using the paddles all the time. They are quite good, even compared to a Porsche!!
You CAN run the car all the way to red line and bounce the rev-limiter. If you wait to 6,000 rpm you get a nice firm shift with NO delay.
At 70MPH, downshifting to 4th is quite fast and revs really hard. This 2007 must be much better the the 05 and 06 as there was no delay. The A6 in my opinion is probably as quick or close to the MN6 depending on the MN6 driver. The A6 is a no-brainer....IT ROCKS and is very fast. Unfortunatly, I have to take it a bit easy for the first 1000miles. The 2007 A6 is really unbelievable.
PS...What a better car than the C5!!!!!!!!!!! And the 2003 was GREAT!!
Oh, by the way...the 07 Z51 is more comfortable than an 03 F55
for those wandering...get the Z51.
Some people claim better shifting with the TC/AH in Competition Driving mode, I hardly ever drive in anything BUT Competition Mode, so i can't comment.
On my 2006, the shift itself is very quick when using the paddles. The problem is that there is sometimes a noticable delay after puching the paddle before the shift begins. It always seems to be on the 1-2 upshift, or the 2-1 downshift. You can learn to anticipate the delay and work around it (hence, hitting the upshift paddle at 5,800 rpm in first gear) but not having it would be better.
Still, I love the A6 compared to the clunky ole A4 that I had in various other cars.
Well my 06 has a delay using the paddles, not a big deal and probalby seems longer then it is. But it is certainly not instant and I have full knowledge of their usage. Keep hearing the 07 has improved this but I have never driven one.
