Default Check engine light?

Hi All - Wondered if anyone was having similar expereince....mine is an
'06 M6 Z51, Melrose headers, GM Racing Exhaust, 1700 miles...check engine light comes on very randomly, and has been doing this before and after header and exhaust install.... Took it to dealer first time, and they replaced gas cap, said defective. Took back to dealer second time, they said no exhaust leaks anywhere, kept car all day ran several tests and finally came up with I must have used 87 octane gas..NOT...each time after dealer reset the code, the light would eventually come back on and then go off after several start/stop sequences. I use 93 octane religiously, and always double check that the gas cap is screwed on correctly (click, click, click) Also, the light will come on and go off multiple times on the same tank of gas...really puzzling.

w/o knowing what codes are being generated we'll all be guessing. I bought and error code reader just for C6 since GM changed this feature from the C5 (where you could easily view and clear error codes via the DIC).

I bought the http://www.diydiagnostics.com/ just to avoid making trips to the dealer if/when my C6 starts throwing codes, especially if they are self-induced like installing mods.

My recommendation for any modded C6 is to spend $70 and buy an DIY error code reader.

Good luck

Tom

First, I believe that you use 93 octane religiously and the following is not intended to imply anything else.

Why would the dealer suggest that you were getting the "Check engine" light because you may have used 87 Octane gas? The car is supposed to be made to run on 87 Octane gas (with reduced performance). Besides, if you went totally and did use it, there would still be some 93 in the tank and the resultant mix would be above 87 Octane. Sounds like the dealer was trying to pull excuses of of their azz.

2 Possible things.#1. the gas cap might not be on correctly,or#2 I get a code very rarely with the headers install. The code comes back to the car is running too lean.I have cancelled the code 2 times in 1 year.So far it has not come back.

If you buy make sure you buy the one that supports the CAN protocol.

In August I bought my first Corvette - a 2000 Coupe, Nassau Blue, and LOVE it. A few days ago my battery went dead. I jumped it and the steering column was locked. I then bought anew AC Delco and immediately upon install the steering wheel problem was solved. However, I then got a "check engine" symbol. I drove it awhile and it hasn't gone away. How do I find out via my DIC what it means? Thanks....
