If it sounded like it may have been an electrical relay, then it's probably nothing to worry about.

I don't remember hearing it before, could the relay be going bad?

I hear it in mine when the car is quiet inside. It is the relay letting you shift into gear when you apply the brake. Just a safety feature. Nothing to worry about.

I hear the same thing almost everytime I brake when it's quiet in the car.....07 A6 with 300 miles.....I thought I was nuts but apparently I'm not.....It's a small click that sounds like it's coming from down on the passenger side. Anyone have a clue?

It's the shifter lock solenoid. It's probably always been doing that. You just started to notice it. Suppose to be that way.

I don't notice it most of the times, but seldomly it's annoying. I wonder why GM couldn't place the relay someplace un-heard.

Three ways to fix this clicking phenominon:
1) Ear plugs
2) Louder stereo
3) Louder exhaust

Well, because it isn't a relay. It is a solenoid, and that has to be located where the plunger can do its job. In this case that's locking and unlocking the shift lever mechanism.

The other clicks people are talking about are relays, stop lamp relay, starter interlock control relay, etc, and those are located under the passenger floorboard in the BCM. They're audible because the noise they make when they operate resonates in the A/C ducting. That's why they sound like they're coming from behind the dash. GM could have located them somewhere else, ie under the hood, or used solid state switches instead of relays, but they didn't.
