I have a very early 05 auto. About 50% of the time the button on the shifter stays locked after the car is started and the brake is depressed. I have to push hard on the shifter with my finger off the button for it to release, and sometimes that doesn't work and I have to bang the shifter. It is not consistent, and I know that when I take it to the dealer they probably won't be able to duplicate it, as always.
I have a late `04 car and have noticed the same thing once in awhile - - frankly, I guess I figured it was just me - - and when I attempt it a second time, it's fine . . .
I'm not certain it's enough of an issue for me to have the dealer mess with it.
Ted, I'm on here every day and I don't think I've seen that problem reported before. 2 or 3 reported the start button falling into the dash, but one of those had just done some accessorizing of the dash.

Have early 05 built in november 04 also and have had the same intemittant problem
reviewed tech info nothing ever found

Had an 06, 07 now and may not be what you're experencing. If I have have my hand on the shift **** and button before pressing the brake, it won't come out of park. Sometimes I have to make a second attempt at hitting the brake first. Sounds different than your problem though. Good luck

Ted, long time, no see post. Hope all is going well.
I have an A4 that never sticks and works smooth as glass. Yours must need an adjustment and or lube, as it is not normal. You could try WD40 on the button, but I suspect it is further down the line. I would try a transmission shop if you are out of warranty or they don't fix it. Most tranny guys know how to adjust the linkage, as they remove and install trannys all day.
I still have a warranty, the button is basically locked and when it unlocks you can hear the actuator click, then you can hit the button. I guess it is off to the dealer and see if I can get them to comprehend the problem.
Here is what is going to happen, I will be able to duplicate it to the service writer, he will go park the car, the mechanic will not be able to make it happen. Happens every time.
Actually mine was an built in 04 the first one in my area.
