Local dealer wanted $53 for a small tube of "Official" Chevrolet silicone to lube the top and door rubber. Do I need it or can another product work just as well?

3M makes a similar silicone for probably less than 1/2 of that.
I don't know about the specific product your dealer was trying to sell you but last year I went to the BMW dealer to get a tube of their weatherstrip conditioner, which I'd heard was supposed to be especially good. They wanted $65 so I backtracked and bought the dialectric grease for $10.

If you take the dealer up on his proposition, you should be HAPPY when the transaction is FINISHed.

My dealer "did the job" for nothing! Anyway, the "unofficial" tube is $3.95!!!!!
This is By far the best goopy stuff I have ever used on rubber seals and thing for a Vert, and a lot less than $53.00.

If you work in an office, keep your eye out for the copier maintenance person. They have a silicone grease (clear) that works like a charm on weather seals. The guy who did the maintenance on the machine in my office told me they have more of that grease than they know what to do with and was happy to give me a tube.

Paying $53 dollars to treat problems that they should not have created in the first place is a big ole SLAP in the face. I would by something similar from the local parts store.
Here is a product called Brake Life from Castle. It is a nice can with a nozzle like Cool Whip and you get 8 ounces for $19.00. Clear....dielectic...pure silicone. Just scroll down and click on the product link in the list. http://www.castleproductsonline.com/...t_listing.html
KY is my lube of choice - check it out here... I have never been disappointed http://www.ky.com/lubricants.jsp After that I would bring some over to the dealer and use some on him for trying to rip you off for $53....
