Default Stupid Question??

Here's the scenario: Me (#1 fob) drives to dealership to pick up my Avalanche that was repaired. My wife in passenger seat with NO FOB. I get in Avalanche and my wife switches to driver seat in Vette. She drives away (to home) and I follow about 10 minutes later.
She said the DIC said NO FOB DRIVE ANYWAY? She selected yes and drove home with no problems. Couldn't a car stealer do the same? i.e. Car running at 7-11 store while driver runs in for quick soda with FOB in pocket. Stealer gets in and drives off with car????

Thanks for any insight. Maybe I should arm the alarm differently??? Passive Mode????

Just like any other car, don't leave it running if you are not in it.

And once it is shut off it will not restart.

The new technology can be be silly because it's less intuitive.
No one would ever try to drive an 'old style' car away without a key, but since the new technology 'knows all' this escapade is not rare to the forum.

Why would you leave any car running without being in it. You're just begging someone to steal it. What are you saving by leaving it running?

My original post was the actual scenario. My wife was inside the vette and drove it back home while I drove my truck back home. She was inside and changed to the driver's side to return home. I followed about 10 minutes later. If this system is allowing her to drive it home with the fob inside or local, then what, the question on this item, would prevent someone to get in a drive it away?

Nothing.
In an 'old style' car you'd realize that you had keys dangling there.
You'd automatically turn the car off and remove them if you were worried that someone could just drive your car away.
If you left the car running then the keys would still be in there.
And then your wife would remove them when she gets home.

With the new system there is no key cue.
And the car can still be driven away without a 'key' if it's running.
But it cannot be restarted.
It's a problem of the new, less intuitive technology.

If you had turned the car off when you exited, she would not have been able to restart it without a fob present.

dont know about your state, but in new york state, a unatended vehicle left running, and you just earned a vehicle and traffic ticket.

Passive mode will not lock the doors if you exit with the engine running, it only works if the engine is off. But you can always hit the "lock" button on your fob after you have exited the car to lock the doors.

That depends on how "old" the 'old style' car is. My fathers friend had a '53 Chevy Panel Wagon (not sure if that was really what it was called but it was like a station wagon without the rear sidewindows). The key was needed to unlock the ignition but could then be removed. The wagon could be started and stopped all day long without ever needing the key again. Don't know if this was an option or if it was the way all of the Chevys of that era operated.

If you leave your Corvette running while running into a 7/11 you deserve what you get. The car will run and drive away if you leave it running. It will not start if stalled or shut off without the fob.

what would you prefer the car to do? turn off 30 seconds after the fob is out of range? what if your wife was in the middle of an intersection when that 30 seconds was over? turn off immediately after the fob is out of range? what's your solution?

sounds like a safety issue to me.
