Default Door Alignment Issue

I have been monitoring a door alignment issue on my new 07 coupe. The driver side door aligns and works perfectly but the passenger door seems to be off a little. The problem is as I close the door slowly I can see it lift maybe ¼ inch as it hits the latch pin. I can also hear it hit when the pin enters the slot in the door. The door looks good for alignment when it is fully closed. The question I have is, would the fix for this be to adjust the latch pin to align with the slot in the door, or align the door to meet the pin?

I would have my local service department fix it in case it became a problem later on.

Default easy

Easy call under warranty and make them fix it like it should have been from the factory. Gotta love that QA on a 50K+ car.

If the door lines up with the rest of the body I would think the latch pin needs the adjustment

They should be able to determine if there is a problem. This will document a possible problem and what they did, if anything for later.

If the door's alignment is good when closed (engaged with the latch pin)...align the door (by adjusting the hinges) to the latch pin so the door does not need to "ride up" as it meets the pin.

I had to adjust the door hinges and stricker. I took it to the dealer first and they really screwed it up and broke the door trim panel retainers and did not replace, so I had to fix it my self. They left grease all ovey my cashmere trim.

1.) Remove door trim panel
2.) Disconnect electrical connector
3.) Peel back water barrier near door stricker
4.) Use torx tool to loosen two (2) screws on stricker
5.) Adjust stricker as required
6.) Reverse above steps

NOTE: If you do not have correct door to body alignment, the HINGES must be adjusted FIRST, and then adjust the stricker. You should NEVER adjust the stricker up or down to MAKE the door align to the body. Adjust the hinges to make the door align properly to the body opening and then align the stricker.

When completed, the rear edge of the door should be flush to the quarter panel to 1mm outboard. (Flush to +1mm)

i would move the bottom hinge not the pin... when the door is closed and it lines up it is not the pin.... see post #6

adjust the body side of the hinge..... have a friend help...

roll down window....
mark bolts with pencil....
have a friend hold the door up a bit... (close door as much as possible and work between)
loosen bolts...
pull up on door a bit....
tighten one bolt...
check alignment....

rinse, lather, repeat.... it may take a while.....

I would bring it back to the Dealer, that's what the warranty is for.

Thanks for all the good advice everyone. I would take it to the dealer but, as calemasters stated, I am afraid they will screw it up and I will have to fix it myself anyway. I've had this happen too many times with repairs.

2LT-Z51 and elofdahl,
You are correct, the door is aligned properly when closed. Adjusting the hinges is what I was thinking and wanted to confirm with you all. So do you think that I can move the back end of the door up just a bit by adjusting just the bottom hinge? I think I need to move it up maybe 1/8 to 1/4 inch.

You'll likely have to slightly loosen the top hinge also. From what you described in the original post, you will be loosening/adjusting the hinges where they attach to the pillar. You should not have to loosen the hinges where they attach to the door itself. Let us know the outcome.

I had the same issue, but on the driver side. It took three trips to the dealer before the service manager fixed it himself. I am very pleased with the spacing all the way around the door; the door seems more balanced now. He did remove three shims from the striker. The owner of the dealership agreed to paint the door since stress cracks appeared near the location behind the clearcoat. I am nervous about the paint job, hope it matches.
