Another XM question
I bought a used 2005 last year. The car had the Pioneer AVIC D1 installed along with a Sirius sat receiver. I am thinking about giving XM a try. My question is the factory XM receiver, is it coded to the car? Do I need the dealer to "unlock" it or can I just have XM activate the receiver? The reason I am looking at XM is that I seem to lose the Sirius signal quite a bit. The antenna is mounted externally next to the factory XM antenna.
Thanks.
Based on many first hand reports from many CF members XM does seem to have better "overall" coverage. Could be the number of "repeaters" they have.
The XM module is located in the rear hatch area of the trunk on the left side under the carpet. I guess/hope it's still there. I don't believe it's coded to the car. Normally when you activate XM service you select channel 0 and write down the code that appears on your display. That code is used by XM to activate your account.

When I bought my '06 (w/XM) if I'd wanted XM I'd had to had to call XM so they could activate it.
Even tho' I had a "free" 90 day trial it had to be activated by XM.
Give XM a call & get the skinny from them about their service.
I bought an 07 Vette without XM (base package) and now want to add just XM radio..........I was told by a manager in Bowling Green that I have to use a "TECH 2" to turn it on when I installed an XM Receiver.......that was confirmed by the company that sells the receivers.......
XM sattelites are in different locations and I believe they have 1 more than sirius, but you'll still lose reception from time to time.Just call or go online to activate and you'll need the code # from the radio which is usually found on channel 0.Don't worry about who's service is better music wise,it's all personal preferrence.I have both and like both.

This is one of the many reasons I went from Sirius to XM. My XM has never lost the signal even when travel is over 2,000 miles. I am now a happy person with XM.

Well, except when you pass under bridges - correct? I have to admit, I have been on XM for over a year and travelling 6 hours to my home on the coast every other week has made driving a lot more pleasant. It's too bad that commercials have now saturated most of the channels but the reality is that selling product pays the bills (even if they are stil losing millions a year).
IMHO the best thing you can do is burn a bunch of MP3 cds and drop the satelite radio idea entirely. Ultimately saves you money and you get the music you want without commercials.
That is of course unless your are using it for something like NASCAR or other talk type radio.
