Never had one but have been doing a lot of interstate driving..... Was wondering if they are usefull and if they need that antenna on the back... Which obviously is a nono.... Any advice etc
I'm no expert, but I did have one for awhile on my C5 years ago for cruises with a Corvette club. They are useful for road trips with others. I had an antenna mount that attached with the rear license plate screws and took it off unless on a cruise. You can buy a handheld CB with a built-in antenna, but the range is a lot less than with a mounted (and properly tuned) antenna.
Indy is correct, our club also uses them for cruises and they are great. You can get the antenna kit from Mid America, Cobra makes a CB with all the controls in the microphone so it's easy to mount. However, the cost and installation hassle are a factor for new members so we may switch to family radio talkabouts (walkie-talkies): range is only about 1/2 mile but that's usually enough. CB is usually 1-2 miles.
As for using the CB to monitor truckers on ch 19, I tried it once on a road trip but gave up after about 30 minutes. I passed a radar trap that no one mentioned, and the frequency is full of obscene drivel from truckers with very large mouths and very small brains. Perhaps you could keep it turned off except in bad weather or when something unusual is happening. If you are REALLY dedicated to high speed cruising, then the CB may be a useful addition to your radar detector. But I just can stand the inane nonsense. It's scary to think that those same people also vote and raise children.
