Default Key west trip

My wife and I are planning a road trip in our Vette. This wonderful C6 on a trip to Key West should be awesome. Leaving Kentucky sometime in March.

Any suggestions on trip routes through Florida? Places to stay in Key West? Must see places and events? Places to avoid?

Thanks for your time.

You have to stop at Sloppy Joe's and get your obligatory T-shirt and then catch the "street fest" (jugglers, musicians, dancers, and a whole bunch of drunks...Marti Gras-like) on the pier on Fridays. Have fun!

Hey HV, made that trip in the '05 last year. We went from West Ky to Boca Raton in one long day. Next day went south and east across the Glades and on to the Keys. We spent a week on Marathon Key (Key Bay Colony) and made the trip on down to Key West in the middle of the week. Sloppy Joe's is a great choice, specially if Pete and Wayne happen to be performing Prowl Duval St and Market Square and watch the sun set over the Gulf.

We are going back in June this year but may have to take the wifes car for an extra passenger.

By the way where in West Ky are you located? Need to hook you up with West Kentucky Corvette Club. Good bunch of folks.

We like staying at the LaConcha right on Duval St http://www.laconchakeywest.com/ Ask for a room in the old section.

The Hogsbreath Saloon has the best Pina Coladas. Let us know when you'll be there and we can watch you on the web cam! http://www.hogsbreath.com/hogcam/

There's a great Cuban restaurant...El Meson de Pepe down by the pier where all the vendors set up and where all the sunset activities are. http://www.elmesondepepe.com/

Also, don't miss the Blue Heaven restaurant for breakfast...you eat outside and the food and service are great. I hear dinner is good there too. http://blueheavenkw.homestead.com/Bl..._Key_West.html

Have a great time! We love Key West and get down there once a year or so.

Down day might consist of:
1600- mounds of shrimp with at the north end of Caroline st.

1800- need to see the madness and sunset at Mallory sq at least once.

1900- Off to the VFW (lots of salty characters) on Elizabeth st for some "cheap" brew haha's, gotta get primed for a long night ahead.

A ton of Naval history in Key West, my personal favorite are the WW2 Catalina seaplane ramps on Trumbo Point. Miltary still own the place, I do believe, you might need to ask for a pass for entry.

Check out google earth before leaving and click on all of the layers for sights!!!

Have been several times,, Love it ! We like staying close enough so can walk to center---not a great place to park vette and if you like your brew like we do then best not to drive. can hire rides ! there are many places but beware of the ones that are less money and real close to center,,,,can be real dumpie !!! If you want to spend some money there are some real great places but are very high price there is the sunsetkeyisland.com
Never been there but looks great. we realy like the KEYLIME INN very simple but lots of fun and clean. best to check ahead to see what is going on that time of year when you will be there,---forget spring break time !!! WOW We have had the good the bad and the ugly !!!
But you will have a ball--everytime we get back we say o-@#$% should have done that too!!! Have fun Howie

Well, seeing how you are a Vet and a Harley rider, stop by our dealership (you go right by it!) and I'll give you a free shirt from the
H-D Dealership!!

We are right on I-4, in Lakeland, FL, Exit 33............can't miss it, we are 100 feet off the side of the interstate................and a football field long!!

Have done the trip several times with our C-5 and with our C-6 from NJ, it's a long ride home though. We have always stayed at the Pier House, it's at the very end of Duval St. Once there you can leave the car in a safe place, it will not be the most expensive car in the lot, just don't park under any trees in the rear lot. You can walk to breakfast across the street and dinner at the marina, not the cheapest place in town but very convienent and you don't have to worry about the car.

I took the A1A from Jacksonville Fl through through St. Augustine, Daytona Beach, to Miami, to Homestead, and through the Keys to Key West. It was the best drive ever. I stayed at:

Hyatt Key West Resort & Marina
601 Front Street,
Key West, Florida, USA 33040

I've been to Key West a few times and all the fun bars are walking distance from each other (On Duval st). We like the ones that were already mentioned (Sloppy Joes in particular). We also love Irish Kevin's (real close to Sloppy Joes) and Flying Monkey's has great frozen drinks to escape the heat in the summer months.
As far as lodging, every time we go we stay at the Simonton Court Inn. It's a great B&B property and has several small pools and many types of rooms. Its walking distance from Duval St and the Pier area. The website is http://www.simontoncourt.com/

Hope this helps

Went a couple years ago, we stayed at the Douglas House. It was reasonably priced and offered a multi-story room with kitchen/living room/etc...

Default Key West --

If you plan to stay in Key West -- there is no better place to stay than the Ocean Breeze Inn. We stay there every year. They have low rates, large rooms, and its just far enough away from the noise for a restful sleep. They also have plenty of free on-site parking -- quite rare for the Keys. Have fun.
