Default Service Active Handling?!

Just started the car to move it into the garage and I got a "Service Vehicle Soon" followed by a "Service Active Handling" on the DIC. Nothing at all done to the car to trigger this and its been fine - all 20,000 miles. Its an 06. Should I bring it to get it checked out at a dealer or chalk it up to one of those PIA mistakes that happen every once in a while?

Default Get it serviced

My 2005 didnt even have 2000 miles on it when I got the ( Service Active Handeling) message. I took it in and they swapped out the sensor , actuator or whatever it is, which by the way, is the exact same part as on the Suburbans, Tahoes, Exc. Thats what the mechanics and parts department told me. So if I were you I would bring it by the local GM dealer and have it looked at. Dont wanna be one of those instant 360 degree spin out of the blue guys that you read about on the forum.

Pete

Mine did the same thing for a while then stopped. 14K+ miles here. I know, I know, I need to take it in. Just can't make myself do it just yet...

If you have the telescoping steering, there is a TSB service bulletin for this. I had it done on my 2006. The wiring harness in the telescoping steering is too short and starts to pull apart. They just remove this tension on the wiring alittle and apply some tape. Takes about 5 minutes. Many forum members have had this done.

I like that it sounds like an easy fix. Guess its time to make the appointment... By the way, do dealers address all the TSB's when the car comes in or only what the customer complains about? Be nice to get it all done at once. (Is there a website or post that lists them all?)

Hit control F, and type C0710, or scroll down to Oct 3, and look for TSB 06-02-35-002A. I fixed mine in less than 15 min. Must remove knee bolster to access connector.

Looks like there's good information on that site - but you have to be a member/subscriber?

For the 2007's, there seems to be quite a few TSB's that address issues popping up on the forum all the time... Anyone know of a free site to access these?

Here's the TSB:

TSB 06.02.35.002

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) C0710 Steering Wheel Position Sensor (SWPS) Signal, Service Stability System Message on Driver Information Center (DIC) (Inspect and Secure Wires in SWPS Connector)

2005-2006 Chevrolet Corvette

with Steering Wheel - Tilt, Telescoping (RPO N37)

Condition
Some customers may comment on a Service Stability Message on the DIC.

Diagnosis with a scan tool may reveal a DTC C0710.

Cause
The most likely cause of a DTC C0710 on a vehicle equipped with telescoping/tilt steering wheel is high resistance in SWPS connector C202. Fretting terminal corrosion maybe present in the SWPS connector due to the telescoping motion of the steering column. When the steering column is telescoped in and out, the female terminals within the SWPS connector may move on the male terminals of the SWPS. This movement between the terminals may cause a high resistance condition in the SWPS connector.

Correction
Remove the driver's side close out panel.

Notice:

• Failure to properly tape the wires in the connector may result in additional concerns.

• Failure to use a small plastic strap 2.5-3.5 mm (0.10-0.14 in) in width may prevent the SWPS connector from properly seating, resulting in additional SWPS DTCs.

Using electrical tape (1), tape from the plastic strap up the wires a minimum of 2.5 cm (1 in).
Install a small plastic strap (2) 2.5-3.5 mm (0.10-0.14 in) wide around the SWPS sensor connector so that it retains the wires to the connector as shown.

Important: Install and remove the SWPS connector a minimum of three times to remove any possible terminal corrosion.

Reinstall the SWPS connector.
Reinstall the close out panel.

same on my 2005 and I brought in the TSB number and they
took care of it. No big deal. That's one of the nice things about the information available on this forum. Sometimes stuff happens but it helps you to keep some perspective and not freak out. As I recall, some of the DIY's didn't even bring it in for the warranty fix. Looked pretty simple and they said it just took a few minutes to fix. Sounds like you need you have have them check out the rear end chatter so get both things taken care of at once. Best of luck.

It also could be a sensor or whatever but if you have the telescoping steering I would put my money on that TSB fix.

Subject: Rear Axle Chatter Shudder On Turns -
keywords bind differential
#PIP3559F - (12/06/2006)

Models: 2004 - 2007 Cadillac XLR
2006-2007 Cadillac XLR-V
1999 - 2007 Chevrolet Corvette, Corvette Z06

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:
Rear axle chatter or shudder on turns on Chevrolet Corvette and Cadillac XLR.

Recommendation/Instructions:
Flush and fill the rear axle with synthetic axle lubricant GM P/N 89021677 (Canadian P/N 89021678) and appropriate amount of the friction modifier additive P/N 01052358 (in Canada 992694). See fluid amounts listed below.

Note 1: In some cases it has shown that a second flush procedure on a second repair visit will correct the chatter/shudder concern prior to replacement of the clutch packs.

Note 2: To properly flush the rear differential remove the left differential cover and get all of the old fluid out off the differential, wipe out the residue replace the cover o-ring and then reinstall the cover and fill with the appropriate amount of fluid and friction modifier additive.

If the complaint or the condition persists after the flush and fill, replace the right and left rear axle clutch packs following published service procedures.

After clutch pack replacement use synthetic axle lubricant GM P/N 89021677 (Canadian P/N 89021678). and the appropriate amount of friction modifier additive P/N 01052358 (in Canada 992694). See fluid amounts listed below.

Note 3: PRIOR TO INSTALLING THE FRICTION MODIFIER ADDITIVE FOR EITHER OF THE ABOVE REPAIRS THE BOTTLE MUST BE SHAKEN VIGOROUSLY FOR AT LEAST 1 MINUTE TO MIX THE ADDITIVE THOROUGHLY.

Once the axle fluid has been changed the car must be driven in 8 - 10 SLOW figure eights to work the fluid between the clutch plates.

Fluid capacity:
Model Year
Model
Differential Lube
Friction Modifier

1999-2005
Corvette ALL
1.69 qt (1.6L)
4 oz. (118 ml)

2006-2007
Base Corvette
1.95 qt (1.85L)
5 oz. (148 ml)

2006-2007
Corvette Z06
2.70 qt (2.55L)
6.4 oz. (190 ml)

Note 4: Export vehicles use 2.01 l (2.12 qt) synthetic axle lubricant GM P/N 89021677 (Canadian P/N 89021678) and approximately 150 ml (5.1 oz) limited-slip differential lubricant additive GM P/N 1052358 (Canadian P/N 992694).

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

Most likely the steering wheel sensor like a rheostat at the floor board area and no bog deal. Most common issue and part usually in stock.
