Hey there C6ers. A friend of mine who is computer challenged was unable to get himself registered here. I thought that it was pretty simple, but that's another issue....
He has an 06 Z51 coupe. He purchased new wheels (track and auto-x wheels) and new GM sensors. The car does not recognize the sensors and the stealership told him that he would have to come in and get the computer re-programmed each time he switched wheels. Anybody else have a better solution?
Once I get a good answer, I promise that I'll slink back over to the C5 forums.

As much as it pains me to say this, the dealership was correct. The sensors each have a unique id that is "registered" if you will, to the car. If he had swapped sensors he would have been fine. Since he purchased new ones, they will need to be re-introduced to the car each time he swaps.
The C6 is different than the C5 was. A strong magnet and his DIC on a C5 and he could have done it himself and been good to go. The C6 requires a sensor tool to excite the TPS to get them to register as you step thru the DIC program.

Like talon90 says, you need a tool that sends out a radio frequency that will excite the sensors to register them with the TPMS computer in the car. Each sensor has its own individual ID#, and the TPMS/DIC only remembers 4 sensors - the last 4 registered. So....each time a C6 owner swaps wheels/tires/sensors, the new sensors have to be registered so the TPMS/DIC will recognize them.
Here's a link to a thread with some videos using several different tire sensor reset tools on the C6 like a tire shop or the dealer would do - its not much more than a 60 second procedure:
I just put new sensors in my car and it took approx 2 minutes to do.
...re-training the car for the new sensors (once you have the correct tool) takes 1 - 2 minutes tops....but of course whenever you swap wheels you must re-train the sensors again.
When I had my wheels replaced at the dealer I was told that besides replacing each wheel in the same location that it was removed from you couldn't be to far from the car with the wheel or you would get an error message. I can't confirm this but I think what their talking about is that if the car's ignition is off the TPS still monitors the tire pressure but like once or twice an hour. If the car is moving then it monitors the tire pressure like once every 15 seconds. A service tool like mentioned here would be the best for this type issue.
This points out one disappointment I have with the C6 ... many of the things I could do myself with the C5 (program the tire sensors, check all the computer codes, etc.) using the DIC and buttons now require very expensive test equipment. I sort of liked the C5 philosophy ...
