The word fob is believed to have originated from watch fobs, which existed as early as 1888. The fob refers to an ornament attached to a pocket-watch chain.

Okay, so I have too much free time today!

OP's question made me curious, so I tried a couple of different things ... and in the process we all learned something, including there is a mistake in the owner's manual (not the first, nor the last, I suspect)
I'll have to try a few more things. My main concern was that if I was letting someone sit in the car, they couldn't start it if I was standing next to them on the outside pointing things out. I would imagine something is off if it can triangulate the position to be inside from the outside. But as we all know, stranger things can.... and will happen.
