Default compass calibration

Okay, read the manual and followed all the directions. The mirror compass shows cal and N and will not calibrate. Drove in circles at least a dozen in both directions and it still won't calibrate. Any ideas? Have the 3LT with Nav. package.Thanks.

Compass shows CAL and N and that is all. That is all it ever has shown. Bought it new just before it snowed and this is the first I've really been able to drive and play with it.

In all of the owner's manuals, compass calibration and compass variance instructions are usually preceded by an instruction to hold and press the mirror ON/OFF light button. We were told by several others here that instruction was incorrect. The mirror auto-dimming ON/OFF button should be pressed instead.

Try pressing and holding the auto-dimming ON/OFF button (on the front of the mirror, not the bottom of the mirror) until a C appears on the compass display. Then drive the vehicle in circles at 5 mph or less until the display reads a direction.

Also note the compass variance. If you don't live in zone 8, according to the instruction on page 110, you'll have to reset the compass variance. Use the auto-dimming light switch in those instructions, not the ON/OFF map light button.

Thanks Jim,

I tried both the map light and the dim on-off switch. I reset the zone to 7. It always shows CAL in the vertical and then a larger N to the side. If I hold the dim on-off for about 14 sec. it goes blank and then returns to the CAL-N display when I let the dim on-off go. Immediatly drive the circles and nothing happens. Stays CAL-N. No radar detectors or any other device in the car to affect the compass. Can't figure it out.

Okay, sorry that didn't help. I'd mark those passages in my owner's manual about the map light ON/OFF switch vs the auto-dimming ON/OFF switch just in case.

I think a very few here have had this problem in the past, but it's been awhile and I don't remember what the final resolution was. You might do a search, but I'd search on 6 months or older, including archives.

Wayne,

I really think you just need to take it to the dealer for a replacement mirror. Maybe call the dealer 1st to see if they have one in stock and if not they can order one for you so you only have to make one trip to the dealer for repair.
