Default Ls3 ???

http://www.sae.org/automag/techbrief...1-115-4-22.pdf

Go to pages 30-32 (Numbering on the actual pages, not the
pdf counter.) From the lats paragraph of page 32;

"Although the Viper SRT V10 VVT valvetrain
now is the technology leader for
cam-in-block engines, it’s known that GM
has a small-block V8 in development with
variable intake- and exhaust-valve timing
in a three-valve configuration. We may
not see a four-valve pushrod gasoline engine,
despite use of that valvetrain in diesel
V8s. However, cam-in-block pushrod
gasoline engines have a high-tech, highperformance
future, and both Chrysler
Group and GM keep engineering teams
on the job of developing it."

Good find Runge.

Maybe VVT in a 2 valve configuration for the LS3 like they've done for the 3.5L V6. I suspect we'll see the 3 valve VVT tech in the C7 along with direct gas injection.

I think the V-Max 6.0 V8 in the new Silverado has VVT, so it sounds like Chevy is positioned to apply this technology on other engine platforms like the C-6.

The 6.2L in the Escalade is VVT.

http://media.gm.com/us/cadillac/en/p...erformance.htm

Variable valve timing (VVT) helps optimize camshaft timing to improve low-rpm torque and high-rpm horsepower. The introduction of variable valve timing through the unique dual-equal cam phaser is the industry’s first application of VVT on a mass-produced V-8 overhead valve engine. The unique dual-equal phaser adjusts the camshaft timing at the same rate for both the intake and exhaust valves.

My son just bought a used 2005 Cadillac with their 3.6L V-6 VVT (variable valve timing) engine with dual outlet performance exhaust. 255HP from 219 cubic inches or 1.17 HP per cubic inch. The LS2 is rated at 1.09 HP per cubic inch. The LS7 is rated at 1.18.

The VVT seems to make lots of power and pretty good fuel mileage. Plus it has a nice smooth liner power band. It's actually fun to drive.

Some powertrain guys at the Detroit auto show told me that there is a VVT Northstar replacement coming out for Cadillac, maybe this is the same thing.
