My passenger front rotor has a mild case of scoring. Three lines in different places all the way around the rotor. They aren't really deep but definately noticable. I am about to put on new rotors and am worried about them scoring as well. Is this normal? Would putting on ceramic pads help? Anyone else have this problem? None of the other rotors have any scoring lines what so ever.
Nobody has any scoring on their rotors? I take the lack of response to mean I have a problem. Car stops fine, no squeals, only 3000 miles.
Minor scoring is not unusual, nor is it a problem. Changing your rotors for minor scoring is an unnecessary maintenance expense. Typically, if brake rotors have minor scoring, but the pads are worn, it is not even necessary to machine the rotors...simply replace the pads.
As shopdog says, scoring is from hard grit particles getting caught between the rotor and the pad...the grit particle gets trapped in the softer pad material, and it "machines" a score in the rotor surface. After the grit particle does the damage, the pad material conforms to the score, and there is no reduction of braking effectiveness. You were unlucky on one wheel.
