And are the Firestones really better that the Goodyears? Owners with more than 5k miles on your Firestones - I would appreciate your comments. This is not a highjack; simply an expansion.
I won't need tires for a while. But when I do, my plan was to order from Tire Rack and take them to my Chev dealer where I bought the car to have them installed. I just feel like they would be less likely to screw up the wheels and if they do, they would be more likely to stand behind their work.
I went around the area to talk about either ordering the Firestones from the shop or doing a Tire Rack drop ship. I went both to stores recommended by Tire Rack as preferred installers and others. Many stores don't seem to have two things: (1) a clue, in general, (2) expertise on run flats and (3) the tire installation equipment needed. It was a frustrating day because the estimates ranged widely on how much to install them, balance them and so forth. I mainly wanted an out the door price. Here in the WDC area there are many hidden costs (taxes) to "protect the environment" and so forth. The Just Tires gave me an estimate of $1400 to order and out-the-door. On line, Tire Rack gave a price of about $975 to drop ship. Maybe it is just me but $425 seems like a lot to install and balance 4 tires. What do you think?
The only thing so far I have learned from this experience is to look around for tires before you REALLY need them. I'm sure this will work out eventually, but this afternoon I returned home to a good cigar, single barrel bourbon and mp3 tunes on my deck for an hour to decompress. What a car! What a country! What tires!
ps Oh, yea. Noone mentioned the $100 back for buying 4.

Reason: addition
Have had them for about 2 1/2 months now.... compared to the GY....they are ok. Definitely worth the price of admission. On straight hard starts, they let go some (GY's didn't). Cornering, you can barely tell the difference. It all depends on how often you are going to go through a set. I actually put on 25k on the GY's. The dealer told me I just created a new world record for miles on GY's.
The Firestone's are much quieter on the highway and look a little thicker when looking at them straight on. I like the look of the tread better also.
Don't know, when it's time to buy new, depending on the tread wear, I think I might end up dishing out a little more for the GY's.
Just my opinion though.....
Here are some pics of them the day I purchased them
How many miles on your tires now, and how are they wearing?
I read your post 2 months back (right after you go the stones), and
was pretty keen on getting a set.
Now after reading your take on them I am not sure about it.
I've only placed about 1500 miles since I purchased them and I really can't notice too much wear on them... Just overall, so far....I was more satisfied with the GY's.
Like I mentioned, they aren't bad tires....you can definitely notice why they are a tad cheaper in costs though.

I bought mine from TireRack (about a month ago, before the $100 cash card was offered!!! ) and had them shipped to my local Just Tires. Cost delivered to the shop was about $975.
They did the swap and balance for about $85.
It was a very painless transaction. The tires arrived in two days from the Nevada warehouse. I would do it again for sure.
