Normally, a shift kit would be for an automatic transmission car. Basically it jacks up the line pressure to make the transmission shift harder and faster, may raise the shift point RPMs too. It would usually be installed along with a high stall torque converter, which allows the car to make a much harder launch at the drag strip. Nowadays, with electronically controlled transmissions, a tuner can do in software what used to take shift kit hardware, so you don't hear much about shift kits anymore.

What some of the manual transmission guys are putting in is called a short shifter. Basically all this is in a C6 Corvette is a shorter shift lever. It increases shifting effort by reducing leverage, but it also shortens the distance the lever has to move to change gears. This allows a quicker shift too.

The 2008s are coming out with a new manual transmission, and a different shifter. Word is, it is better from the factory than anything currently available from the aftermarket. So hold onto your money until you drive a 2008.
