I have read about tunning and ECM learning has been mentioned. While you are driving just exactly what is the ECM learning? Does the learned data get stored some where? Is this learning process going on all the time?

I'm not sure as to the capacity the ECM has. I don't think it stores much data as far as the car's performance. Perhaps 20 seconds worth, for accident investigation. But, as far as the dealership downloading your last track day? Don't think it can, at least I hope it can't!

it is a lot more then just 20 sec. some codes before it goes away on its own, requires min 40 drive cycles.

The ECU typically takes Data from the many sensors that set the tuning parameters for the conditions the engine is operating under. Some of this input is acted on immediately, some increments to stored data tables (in Eproms so the data is retained) that are refreshed over time. Most of the long term storage date is fueling related. This diagram sorta shows what is going on. Additive adaptation is idle fueling. Multiplicative adaptation is partial throttle data. There are usually Pre-set maps for WOT operation.

there is 2 types of fuel injection, open and closed loop, one is fixed, the other learns, esp if a turbo and pipes are present. That is the extent of my knowledge, lmao.

It learns during closed loop, and can apply that to adapt the tables for open loop operation. If your LTFT's are negative it won't change the fuel table values but it they are positive (the PCM is having to add fuel to the tables in closed loop) then the PCM will add fuel to the tables values by what it has learned.
