Well, how do explain that every month I get an email that says my oil is this, my tires are that and my milege is xyz.... somthing is sending something...
You obviously gave them permission and an email address so that they can connect to your car once a month and pull some minor information. I believe they download some information to the unit and have it call home every month. I think they call it vehicle diagnostics and the information provided is pretty routine. Its more of a marketing gimmic than anything else. If you were in the car when the connection is made and the information is downloaded you would know it.

One of the primary reasons I ordered my C6 (and waited 5 weeks) instead of taking one from the dealer's lot is because I didn't want OnStar. All the vettes in his lot came with OnStar.

Well, yes I did, because I am a subscriber.. but the point was that they check up on me when I dont know it. Just today I got an email saying everything was A-ok.. I didnt push the button or ask for it.. so it does 'track' your car, which is what you said could not happen unless you asked for it.....But it does connect random IF you are a subscriber.
I would pay to remove onstar, but thankfully my car did not come with it. Saved me some money.
I'm with you. My last car came with OnStar. I dropped it after a year. Never used it except this was the only way to get the car phone. Eventually, I decided that was a waste too. Wish the 'vette had Bluetooth for the cell phone. In my new 'vette, I was glad to opt out of getting OnStar. My suggestion ... don't waste your money. The monthly fee is high for a service that is only a marginally useful safety net. It's like buying too much insurance.
You don't have to disconnect OnStar. You have to hit the blue button to activate the registration process where it dials out to OnStar and then they ask for your information. If you don't do this OnStar is not activated. It is as simple as that. I get a kick out of your histrionics about OnStar tracking you. As I have said previously you car has to dial out to make a connection to the OnStar people. When it does this it mutes your radio. They cannot connect to your car without your knowledge so they cannot track you without your knowledge. Quit putting out wrong information. Big brother is watching in most cases but not in the case of OnStar.
Not true. Regardless of whether you do or dont start the service they can connect to the car. They have done so already via court order to stop cars during high speed pursuits. They have also used onstar to record conversations, in other words wiretap via onstar. This also requires a court order. I actually watched a caddy stopped in a pursuit on the 6 oclock news and they discussed how it was done via onstar. We also have a sheriff in our local club and he told us it was standard procedure to see if a car attempting to elude police had onstar or other similar services like bmwassist to stop the car. Only useful in a protracted OJ style pursuit where there is enough time to jump the hoops required to make it happen but doable as long as the system itself has not been physically disabled.
Having said this I have no fear of being "tracked" by onstar. I dont rob convenience stores where I might end up in a high speed pursuit, nor commit the serious crimes that wiretaps are used to combat. Outside of that it is my understanding that onstar is very conscious of the fact that they will be crucified if it ever got out that people were listening in or pulling other such shenanigans and they are (supposedly) very strict with their policies in regards to privacy.
Unbelievable... the guy asks about the feasibility of adding On Star to his vehicle and all the haters had to chime in about how much "they" think On star sucks and warning others that it's just a tracking device so the "man" can track you and your driving habits.
For crying out load! Gimme a break...
I'm not fond of black wheels, but lot's of others love the look. Consequently, I don't bother reading let alone replying to any thread concerning black wheels letting everyone know how much I dislike them.
OK, done ranting and heading back to my dark corner...

Of course it does... and you gave them an email address and signed up for the service. However, if you don't want to recieve the diagnostic emails simply follow the link in the email to unsubscribe to that part of the service.

More misinformation and fear to spread to those that believe in conspiracy theories. There is no provision in OnStar to stop the vehicle. If there was they would be advertising it.
I purposely omitted on-star when I ordered my car. It is a pleasure vehicle, I have a cell phone and NAV, so I just couldn't figure out why I would need to spend money on it.
