Possible XM volume fix?
I too was complaining about the XM volume. This mod for the XM as an ipod input has me thinking. I use a battery powered pocket audio amp with a volume control on my motorcycle to get the sound where I need it for my ear buds. Since these wires you are cutting to connect the ipod are basically line inputs to the head unit for left and right channels I'm thinking my in line audio amp will work to boost the XM output to the head unit. Anybody know a reason it won't? If it does I know where I can buy one that runs off 12 volts and the bass response is way improved.

It will work with the NAV system as an AUX input the same way it will for non-NAV. You may be asking about controlling the iPod from the screen.. which would require programming and accessing the serial data bus. Not really a DIY mod!
Thanks for the info Gearhead, very useful!

That port is only available on the standard radio. Mine with NAV doesn't have it.

I have a 2005 with the RDS AM/FM Stereo w/ 5 disc in dash CD w/MP# playback and XM. What do you suggest as the best way to hook up my IPOD. I would like to do it without having to cut any wires. Look forward to your thoughts.

I was a doubter. But this fix worked like advertised.
PAL, AfterMarket this, AfterMarket that, Nav this, Nav that, Blah, Blah, Blah.
The price for the the cable has gone up to a whopping $12.
Less than 1 hr.
XM has never worked well. So it's loss is no biggee.
Few additions to fix. Mine is a vert.
Removal of waterfall is straight forward. 2 x #15 torx screws on the top, 2 pins behind, pull out the center pin first, the plastic washer is a locator that goes throught the panel, when you pull the center pin first, it goes easier, when looking at the waterfall, there is a push pin on the lower left, you can put your hand in the waterfall and push and pull at the same time, makes it a little easier.
There is only a small bit of wire to work with in this location, pull the harness out before working on it. Pull the blue square out a little, the the harness will come out then.
The wires are small, probably 22, so you will need small wire screws or crimpers, plus some tape to finish it off.
The wires from the ipod go to the head unit, not back towards the XM box.
It's warm here lately, but you can always count on snow before Easter, I cant wait to put the top down again and listen to my own music,

It, like the other Ipod adapters tested, offer both an auxiliary input and and Ipod input with limited control of the Ipod on the nav/radio unit. It will also charge your Ipod.

This is a great mod! thanks for the info everyone. my situation is that I am going to add factory NAV to my bose on my 2008 thereby removing my HU with the Aux Input. I was think to strip the male end of the radio shack wire and then mount the female end somewhere along the radio to make it look like a "factory" style input. Should work the same right ? just gotta figure out a spot to do it.

Awesome write up... but I'm not quite sure I understand the wiring and that diagram image is so shrunk down I can't even read whats on it.
Let me know if I get this right:
1. I strip the 3 wires from the XM module.
2. I strip the 3 wires from the radio shack cable.
3. I take one wire from the cable, and twist it onto the copper part of the XM wire
And does/did anyone else have a hell of a time getting that darn XM Module out of there?
Those stupid screws on the top keep me from getting it out!

This thread should answer your question about the USA Spec PA11-Vette:

In case any of you have dead battery issues with any of the after market aux interfaces, check out this link:

My PIE interface was draining my battery... Just FYI

I finally got my '08 JSB 3LT a few days ago and did this mod to add a line-level input for my MP3 player.
I wanted to let others know that it wasn't necessary to install a relay to switch between the XM and MP3 player as the source. I was going to add the relay and put in a switch to toggle it between the two sources, but then I had an idea. I wondered if a "silent XM channel" would suffice. I found that XM channel 0 keeps the amp on but without any XM audio signal present. So by simply tapping my MP3 player's audio output to the wires described above, I'm able to get it working more simplier than expected. No relay and no switch issues to deal with. Sounds real good.
Small nit:
I got an audio hum (not full loudness hum as when there's no audio ground, but say ~10% - 20% hum) when the mp3 player is turned on. I solved this (got rid of all the hum) by grounding the audio shield ground wire directly to the XM module's chassis (instead of the audio common wire as described above). There are screws there to easily attach the ground wire to the chassis. Now there is absolutely no hum. Not sure why the hum is there when I ground it per the instructions above, but the simple chassis ground did the trick and I was running out of time.
Note: I did notice that the audio volume of the XM radio audio is reduced a bit when the MP3 is also turned on (in pause mode) and I'm guessing it's due to the double circuit load on the input line. With both in parallel, it's probably something like 1/2 the impedance as usual. I don't think this will cause any harm to either the car radio nor the MP3 player, but I'm not an audio engineer. The volume returns to normal if the MP3 player is powered off or if the audio input line is unplugged from the MP3 player. If anyone has any insight on that particular item, especially if you're an audio specialist, please let me know. I plan on using it as it is, since I'll never have both the mp3 player and the XM radio tuned to an actual channel at the same time.
I hope this additional info about tuning to XM channel 0 is of help to someone else who might be thinking of doing this mod.
Tae
PS: Thanks to (Ray) Kawal and Gearhead65 for the help and inspiration. I love doing electrical mods like this.

I had one of these 20' Radio Shack 1/8" extenders in my junk cable collection. I don't have a clue when I bought it, but I certainly wasn't using it. I decided to use the female end so I had a female aux jack in the center console, and use a male to male cable to connect anythign. Looks more OEM that way, in my opinion. $0 out of pocket rocks!
