Unfortunately I hardly use my vette for any mundane daily errands anymore. It’s a damn shame I can’t use it more but I just don’t want the aggravation finding my cars been dinged or abused in some way. People are so into “ME” they simply don’t care about you or your property! Look how people drive today. Total carelessness, taking their half of the road in the middle, failure to signal, tailgating and the list is almost endless. There has been a complete and total coarsening of our society in general and what we experience with our cars is simply the tip of iceberg IMO. Sure there are still lots of decent respectful people out there but those numbers dwindling fast. It’s a shame but that’s the price we pay for becoming such a politically correct society where no one’s ever at fault for anything. Everything is always someone else’s fault therefore taking personal responsibility is at an all time low….
I am the same way. That's why we have never sold our '95 Civic. If it is just a short trip to the store or somewhere at night where parking is going to be tight, we just take the Civic. This way I can park in any space and I don't worry about it. It's also nice to have for work since it is only 5 miles away and sits in an open lot with very close spaces that are all full.
Yup, it's tough being nuts about one's Vette. The world is basically against us.
I once parked my year-old 67 coupe in the most-distant slot in a huge, empty market parking lot at midnight in L.A. There were only about a dozen other cars in the lot, and hundreds of empty spaces. When I came out with my bag of groceries I saw a gigantic Buick pulling right next to my Vette, then the woman opened the door and smacked my Vette hard. I stalked toward her, dropped the groceries, and she retreated into her Buick. I said, "My car didn't have a ding until you just put one into it, bitch. Let's see how you like paint damage." Then I leaned my weight into a key I stuck against her car door, making a long, nasty paint curl. She was stunned, lowered her window a bit, and said, "My husbands a lawyer, I'll sue you!" I replied that my license number was VIA300 and I wanted to talk to him about how a dumb bitch treats other people. I hate people like her. Apologies for the rant, I haven't thought of this for years. Anyhow, water spots are better than door dings!
Spent the morning detailing the car, then drove it down to the local shopping center to pick up some goodies before heading out to the boat. Parked in my usual 'Corvette-****' way, as far away as possible and next to an island, so no one car get to at least one side of the car. Returned with a cart full of goodies, and the car has been soaked by the sprinkler system. AND, to rub salt into the wound, it's the only sprinklers on. All other islands, 'bout a dozen or so, are dry as a bone! #$!?*&%%!@ Walmart.
Happened to me @ work once... on a Sunny 85 degree day! Turns out the water was hard (full of minerals) and after backing in the sun all day it took a couple days of car washes, waxing and buffing to remove the water spots!
BTW, for over 42 years of driving, I have never seen a bad Corvette driver (or parker).
You know, I've never thought about this, but I think you might be right.
Might be fun sometime to do a thread on people's parking strategies. I think mine are a little ****-retentive, but I'll bet there are more interesting stories than mine.
Anyone care to start? This may or may not be the appropriate thread.
...if possible, that gives people only one door to park next to...
Back to on topic; my first "sports car" was an 84 300ZX - parked it behind a bar the first night I took it out, came out one beer and an hour later, and someone had taken out the the pass. side mirror.
Just smashed it.
My brother still has his first car, an 87 Honda CRX (HF - the 70 hp model).
He keeps it pristine, and always did/does the "park it as far away from everyone else" thing as is humanly possible.
About 3 years ago, someone keyed the **** out of his car. It wasn't a vengeful girlfriend, or some ***** that had it in for him - it was just a moderately nice car parked out where no one should've/could mess with it.
And for that, someone DID mess with it.
My brand new 350Z, back in the fall of 02, I'd had it about two weeks, and parked carefully - someone took a key down to the sheet-metal from stem to stern on it. Made me physically sick for a couple days.
People suck when it comes to cars and envy.
Hope it never happens to my new black Z51 beauty... but as she's my DD, I know it will, eventually.
There should be a law, just like shooting someone invading your home and threatening you is considered justifiable homicide - a man or woman intentionally messing with your car for no good reason should be at the mercy of the car's owner.
Back in the day my friend's dad was a professor at the University of Arizona (fortunately not one of mine). He drove a Mercedes Roadster vert. On one occasion someone parked extremely close and dinged his door....he was furious. He wrote the person a heartfelt note explaining his displeasure....and then he affixed it to their door with a 16 penny nail.
Excellent story and most admirable of your dad's friend to have left a note! I must pack a nail and hammer in the back of my 67 and 07! Thanks for the tip!
I attribute this conduct as a statement to us that some people go out of their way to disrespect us for having a nice car. It shows a willingness by some people to initiate confrontation by deliberately causing provocation.
I agree completely. There's a subset of low-lifes (no matter how much money they have or how expensive the car they drive) who seek confrontation, and the current mania for gigantic SUVs/vans, etc. is perfect for them to be in all our faces all the time. My 07 coupe is my daily driver, so I'm sensitive on this topic. My backup car is my 67 convertible, which other drivers stare at, but don't realize that their cars go where they stare.....
30 years driving our 55 Corvette all over the country and no trouble , last year while in Nevada so the wife could give away some of my money came out of the Casino and some one wrote GAY on the top of the left fender . If I could have caught them I would be doing hard time
agree with all posts because same happens to me too,BUT i also find it
so dangerous for local runs because of poor/lousy drvers around.
terrible and dangerous.love the fairer sex like we all do,but i think a lot of them are distracted in their driving habits by "other"issues.
scary close calls--don't want mine to be a garage queen but not a sitting duck either
You always seem so calm and easy going at the SCC functions. I'd never have thought you had that in you.
Wayne
Wayne,
Calm and easy going, that's me. Except when some dork messes with my Vette! Ask me next week how I treated one fool who tried to run me off the road long ago !
Been there and done that. I still park way out but now avoid the islands. For that matter I avoid Walmart!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wally World is no place for a Vette. Neither is Lowes or Home Depot.
I had a pisspot park so close to my Suburban that must have wiggled his fat *** out of the passenger side himself. I don't understand when the lot is completely empty, some dumbass has to make it hard for himself to get out of his OWN truck. Doh! Idiots.
The burbs out here has grass & landscaping on every median strip, sidewalk, etc. It seems every time I detail the car & drive it just down the street I am accosted by the flooded roads from the sprinkler runoffs. In the grand scheme of things, nothing to get too stressed about, but irritating just the same when you get dirty water splatters all down the side of the car 10 minutes after spending hours washing & waxing!
I've never keyed anyone because people are sue happy now and figure if you have a Vette you have extra money they can have. There is, however, now law that I'm aware of that keeps me from placing copious amounts of saliva on thier door handle. I've never been patient enough to wait to see the looks on their faces when they grab ahold of that nice, slippery handle but I smile when I think about it anyway.
I'm on my 3rd Vette now. The first two I actually had people park on top of my front-end. Once in a grocery store and once in Costco. Only minor scratches to the license plate cover and my insurance agent said they wouldn't go after them. Both times, I was also in the back 40 of the parking lot. I honestly don't think that they intended to do it, just being stupid. My new C6 gets parked a ways away and now always with a street light in front of it.
