Default Replacing shift boot in my 2005 Automatic

I would like to change the cheap looking stock shift boot in my 2005 automatic. I have been to the Redline Goods web site and looked at their instructions for replacing the boot. The problem is they are showing removing some kind of plastic cap on top of their shifter. Well my car's shifter does not look like the shifter in their example. Can anyone give me a link to some good instructions for replacing the shift boot in a C6 automatic, other than the Redline site?

Thanks,
Mellow-Yellow

I too am replacing my shift boot. I have already replaced the arm rest and the parking brake boot. I got everything from Redline as well and had them make the arm rest .5" taller so I could add padding. I am waiting to do the shift boot when I install an insulation kit from exotic vette once it gets here. That way I only have to remove the center console once. You can see on the pics that I left a link for that on my
'06 C6 automatic that the piece of the shift handle that is painted VY simply pops off. It used to be that aluminum color. Here are the pics:

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply Kim, but my shifter does not look like yours. Yours looks like the one on the Redline site. Here is mine.

I replaced the automatic shift boot. My setup looks like Kim's. Unfortunately, the **** was on there rock-solid and appeared to be glued as well. I tried to follow all of the documents I could find, spoke to the dealer and to the vendor. It would not budge and I felt I was gonna do some serious damage in forcing it.

After messing with it for 2 days, I finally did something probably ill-advised but it worked for me. I clipped a few of the stitches at the top of the boot, slipped it over the **** and then re-stitched it by hand. It was a PITA but it worked and looks good.

Before going this route I would advise calling your local dealer and asking them to fax you the 2-3 pages from the factory shop manual. It might help you...

Good luck!

If you want quality help and product pm Geraldo at Down South Vettes. He will know how to remove that shift ****.

Mine was different. Good luck.

The square looking **** on the 2005 A4 comes off like this;

-Look in front and you will see a small slit in the leather ****
-Using a very small flat screw driver or scribe pull out the 'u' shaped spring pin
-The **** will just come off now
-Getting the boot off is a different animal and I'm not where I can see it at work
-You need to put the car in neutral and remove the console. Has to be in neutral so the console will come off
-The boot goes around the oval shift area and is held in by a tight elastic band. It will pull off
-The area where you see DRN123 for the gears pops off by pulling it straight up but the red indicator has to be removed from the shifter shaft first
-At the boot top there is a tiny zip tie that holds the top boot to the plastic piece that slides in the shaft slot so it is positioned correct to mate up with the ****
-All that will slide up now
-I left my boot alone but I hear Down South can make a boot for you as that whole area and getti ng it off was a pain. Also it will be a tight fit if using leather as you will see when you get in there
-NOTE-be careful not to mess up the 2 micro switches that are under the boot right in front of the shifter base. Been there and did that and my micro switch lever came off preventing me from moving the shifter at all. Had to look a bit to figure out what way it goes back on as it popped off before I saw it and can go on either way
-All I did is replace my shift **** with a Momo (black/chrome) and looks far better. Can send or post pics if needed when I'm at home as the work computers won't allow access to photobucket
-There is a thread in here also that shows how the console comes off and it is far easier than you think.

That's it. I use one of those jewelry screwdriver sets to do the prying.

WOW Radical! Great post! Thanks for the valuable info. Will take a closer look at my **** this afternoon after work. I reall like the looks of your Momo. What is that little black ring at the bottom of the ****? Where did you find the Momo?

Thanks again for the info!

The momo can be had on line as there are only 2 types for an auto and not listed as specific to the C6. The black ring is a small zip tie I had to use as there was no way to get the boot on the shift **** bottom. The momo install for our car is something else I would have to explain because it will not fit/work as in from the box. I had to do a small amount of engineering after much thought and looking to make it work. The momo has a chrome piece that screws on the bottom that would have hid the boot but the inside diameter is too small to fit over the shifter shaft.

Radical, would you mind explaining your method of installing your momo. It's the same one I have and I have been trying to figure out how to make it work.

Does anyone know how the 07 Auto shift **** comes off? I ordered the new boot from Gerardo, but his instructions only show the manual shift.

Go to Redlinegoods.com to double-check(their instructions and pics make it easy) but if your shifter is the same as mine it is very easy to remove. You can remove the plastic insert first by prying up with a jeweler's flat-tip or you can leave it like I did. It should come off either way. Turn the plastic collar below the shift handle to the 2 o'clock position and pull up on the handle. This will only get off the handle. To remove the boot the center console has to be removed. See Redlinegoods.com for the instructions.
