Default vert question

I hope the convertible guys on this forum can help me. I have heard that the windshield frame on the vert can protect the occupants about as well as a rollbar in case of a rollover. Is this true and does anyone know how well you are protected by the windshield frame in case of an accident in the vert. Thanks

There was some pics on the Forum a few months ago that had a C6 Vert that rolled and flipped. He walked away from the car uninjured. The Vert is very safe.

Found the thread:

I had one, but have never had to test the windshield. I've read that it is designed to function as a rollbar.

About a month ago, some guy in Minnesota posted pictures of his Convertible the day he rolled it. The car came away in great shape (as far as occupant protection). You might do a search - he posted quite a few pics.

Someone recently posted that it met some 'federal rollover standard'. No clue what that really means, but there have been a lot of posts citing the vert's rollover safety. Don't want to find out personally.

Shiny side up!

I doubt the windshield functions as a rollbar, but it would be comforting to know that it did.

I definitely do not feel as safe in my Verts as I did in my C6 coupes, so I am just extra careful.

I remember that thread and those were interesting pics. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any articles, tests, etc of the performance of the windshield frame and its safety - just for my own interest

It does serve as a rollbar, however, it's not going to provide protection like a roll-cage. There is still a high likely hood that if the top is down, your head could be in serious harms way. So I think to a degree you are right. But it is designed to support the car in the event of a roll-over.

Don't all verts built today have to exceed certain roll over protection standards? These same standards caused the demise of verts in the mid 70s if I'm not mistaken.

No. The standards never went into effect. The standards were expected to arrive in the late '70s or early '80s, so the OEMs stopped developing convertibles. That's why American convertible production ended in 1976 (Cadillac--the last Vette vert of that era was a 1975 model, of course).

But the Reagan administration showed its unwillingness to impose the standards, so the OEMs brought convertibles back in the mid '80s.

Convertibles do not have to meet any rollover standard. Coupes and sedans do. The Vette convertible is said to be able to meet the federal standard for coupes, but I haven't seen proof of this personally.

This is true. The windshield frame for the C6 convertible meets/exceeds the government roll over standard for fixed roof cars. With that being said, the convertible still does not meet the qualifications for SCCA or NHRA racing.

Isn't the C6 designed as a convertible?
