This issue comes up so much on the forum. Bottom line.........
1. People resent you having a car that smokes their car
2. People resent you having a car that makes their car look like crap
3. People resent you having a car that looks like it would be more like driving an F18 than a car, while their car looks like it would resemble driving a school bus.
4. People are jealous.
Corvettes do not blend in. They stand out. They look like race cars. That, for some reason, tends to **** people off. Ain't it great?!!!!
Never really noticed any Corvette hatred. On the other hand my daily driver is a Hummer H2 and I get flipped off, thumbs down, and head shaking on a daily basis. I was pulling into a greenhouse in amish country the other week and some fifty something lady in some small pos that was leaving the greenhouse starts giving me a look and shaking her head at me as she goes by. I put my window down and she says shame on you for buying such a thing. My response was yeah stick it up your a$$. Unbelievable. F'em.
mid life crisis, small foot size, etc... I would NEVER buy a car to impress others. I'm a busy professional and a single parent with full custody. I just do not have the time. I like a variety of cars including Miatas, Minis, and yes even Mustangs. As for the vette, I likey the performance for the money. It being American made doesn't hurt either. One of my partners called it a red neck car and I should of bought a Porsche. During the eighties they were "Guido" cars. My staff felt I should of bought a 5 series Bimmer. Test drove one. Seemed kind of boring. It was a 530 though.
I agree on the American made part that is one of the biggest selling points for me. I undestand and respect other view points on this but I am very pro on American.
I have gotten the same reactions too. You know what? Who gives a Sh$t. I worked my butt off for years. My Corvette and Rolex watch (another issue) are my rewards for hard work and success. I get the same wise *** remarks about my two tone Rolex Submariner. People like to ask me what time it is and then say that there $15 Timex has the same time and they saved $7k. When I meet someone with a Ferrari, I am happy for them, not jealous or envious.
Exactly, same for me but I have learned to not tolerate jealous friends or relatives. As you know we gave up other things or worked harder than they did or they could have what we have.
i've been primarily a ford owner all my life. i never hated vette owners nor have i been "hated on" (that i know of ) since i got it three months ago. i'd have got one sooner but never was in a position to (raising kids and then putting them through college). it's a DD and i love to drive it.
It maybe used to be envy. I think now it is hate. I think it is politics. If you drive one of those horrid Prius things, you are respected by people who like to make an environmental statement. The Prius owner is bragging to his enviro-weenie friends and showing how much he cares. I feel the opposite. I don't believe their "global warming" crap and feel a Corvette makes the opposite statement to the enviro-weenies and their political allies. They do not know (or care) that a Corvette coupe costs less and gets better mileage than the Suburban in which the mom is carting the kids five blocks to school. I like a Corvette because it irritates the greenies. Screw 'em. I hate their politics and I hate their Prius cars. And when I have to leave a car parked where it might be damaged by the haters, I take my sacrificial 1994 Roadmaster wagon - they ignore that car even though it gets poorer fuel mileage.
I don't think either side of global warming knows if it's real or not. I just think it would be better to error on the side of maybe it is something to it, just in case it's real. Having said that I'm not ready to give up my Z06 for global warming. I feel it gets good enough gas mileage to help anyway. But I think we should at least think there is the possibility of global warming. I try to be "Green" in most other possible ways. Those that say global warming is real and those that say global warming is not real both don't know for sure. It's too important an issue for the our planet, so lets assume it's real just in case. We don't have to give up our Vettes for this.
Wow, I haven't really noticed the "Corvette Hate" thing in over thirty years of Corvette ownership.
I suspect 99% of this is simply paranoia. Most other drivers probably have other things on their mind, and you can't tell what somebody's thinking from a two-second glance.
That said, there are always people who judge people for absurd reasons, such as the car they drive. Look no further than the guy a few posts back ranting about Prius drivers.
Back to Management 101; Maslow's Theory, and what we look forward to as we climb the 'ladder' to self achievement. Most of the folks out there we are driving around are trying to make a paycheck to paycheck existence as best they can (it is tough out there for most.) Many are thinking of the day when the kids are gone, the bills are caught up, and they can afford 'toys'. When they see the 'impractical' (read indulgent) 2 seat sports car (including Porches, etc.) it unfortunately may invoke negative feelings towards us (they don't understand or love performance cars). However we paid our dues, and what we drive should not matter, for we earned it. I too, have been on the wrong end of things.
I live in an area that has alot of very wealthy people and don't think anyone really notices the Corvette. I think people here only hate people in the big Hummers.
The last two days I passed to different groups of punk kids standing on different corners.. Both times I thought the worst, braced myself for all the sh__ that was going to thrown my way or whatever smart-a__ comments and hatred that were going to be voiced…
Both times I got – “great car man !!” , “beautiful car!! “, “Love the shine on that red !! “ , they all waved and gave thumbs-up !! I was so shocked I almost dropped my S&W 38 that I had placed in my lap… . Go figure…..
I think because, at least here in Southern California anyway, the Vette is not a trendy car. By many, especially Euro Snobs, any American car is considered "tacky" and for lower class and less sophiscated individuals. There is a young guy (14 years old) in my neighborhood who loves Vette's. He told me he was telling a friend at school about Vette's and his friend told him that Vettes "were a Black Man's car" and that BMW's and Mercedes were the best... Sad but true. I must admit I cringe when I see a Vette with spinners or huge wings on the back, but I respect their choice none the less and will still give the wave.

I never used to hate anyone with a Vette. Just wished I had one, or the owner would at least take me for a ride! I like to give a ride to anyone who wants. It defuses any possibilty of hatred and enlightens them.

Same here. I remember Vette's catching my attention when I was 10 years old and said I would have one some day. Finally at the age of 54 I got my first, and probably only one. I love it when people stop and ask about the car. I always take the time to let them look it over, sit in it and describe the Vette ownership experience... and if they want to go for a ride, I do that too. I'm blessed
