"Cat back" is a term coined for the portion of the exhaust from the Catalytic converter back to the tips. When replacing the factory exhaust with an aftermarket you have the choice among brands of changing everything from the Catalytic converter (Cat back) or just going with mufflers.

Only problem is the advertizing. Most advertized "cat backs" are not cat backs, they're axle backs (just short pipes w/mufflers and tips). If you don't get an "X" pipe or "H" pipe with the axle back it's not a cat back.
