Just reading an article in Corvette Magazine this evening concerning security systems and the Corvette. It said that the government mandated steering column locks in the 70s. Why doesn't the C6 with auto trans have them?

Because the locks were more trouble than they were worth. With the new encrypted rolling code entry and starting system, the column lock didn't add any anti-theft benefits, and the system had caused problems all through the run of the C5, which GM seemed unable to fix.

Automatic transmissions lock the shift lever, so they don't need to lock the steering wheel too. Manuals can be popped into neutral and rolled tho, so I guess thats why manuals still have the steering lock....at least I think that's how the reasoning goes.
From: Deerfield, Illinois Turn On, Turn In, Track Out
I have an 05 MN6 and I had the dreaded sterring column lock problem where the lock malfunctions and the car cannot be turned on. It had to be flatbed towed to the dealer. It took 2 weeks for GM to get me the part. Totally annoying. It is there as a security device but since the car is secure enough with keyless entry, etc. it's better it doesn't have it!
