I assume you are talking about the differential ratio and not the transmission gear ratio's:
05 A4 automatic's came with either a 2.73 or a 3.15 ratio.
06 and 07 A6's both came with 2.56.
08 A6's come with either a 2.56 or a 2.73 performance ratio.

Well, you're already turning 2,000 RPM at 70 MPH. If you went to a 3.73 or 3.90 rear ratio, you'd be burning more gas. The car would burn the tires more easily from a stop, of course. There'd be less stress on the transmission, but maybe more wear since it would have to spin faster to make the same speed.
