When I shopped about a month ago for a 2007, 3LT, A6 Coup, I went in knowing a few things about pricing that I learned here. The "best" price is going to be close to "GSU" ..... these are prices for GM employees and suppliers. They appear on the actual invoice or build sheet which you may or may not be shown. If you're shown an "invoice," for it to be the real deal its going to have the GSU pricing on it.
Here's the rough formula for arriving at an approximaton of the these prices without a ture invoice or build sheet in your hand (these percentages vary but not by much):
Supplier pricing is equal to the following
base price is MSRP minus 9.4%
options are MSRP minus 16.4%
there is no discount off the delivery fee
There is also the possibility that there will be a 1% advertising fee in the lowest price the dealer is willing to go to and that is a legitimate charge .... some have it, some don't.
Even at supplier pricing, the dealer still gets a 3% hold back from GM .... if you get the dealer to a supplier price, he's still getting about $1500 on a $50,000 vehicle .... but that's not going to be negotiable in my experience.
Buying the 07 from dealer stock, I got another $510 off and my price was $50034 .... the doc fee was $488. This is a negotiable price as is anything else (except an advertising fee) the dealer tries to list as an "add on." I split this with the salesman. $50322 was the final. Note how close this is to GSU. You should also note that this is about $200 below what web sites like Edmunds.com will show as the price people are paying for the car (Edmunds calls it TMV).
Run your 08 Vette from the window sticker as I did above and that's a ball park starting figure (within a couple hundred bucks). I think there are some forum vendors here who will come close to this ... if you go with a forum vendor, I'd recommend you take the NCM delivery for about $400 and enjoy the plant tour and the ride home ... that's what I'm going to do on my next Vette.
Doc fees vary widely .... its just another dealer add on like "undercoating" used to be to boost the profit margin. I've got no porblem negotiating these fees with dealers when they appear.
The dealer has to make some money to pay employees, keep the lights on and pay the rent and and I'm willing to contribute to that .... to a point. That point is usually trying to buy at or near near GSU.
