well I violated the under 55 for 500 miles advisement in the owners manual today. was very surprised that very litle is said about breaking in the new LS3.
Curious if any LS3 owners had an advice given to them by dealers?
PS. Almost got hit today by someone rubbernecking looking at my car.
better hope Onstar doesn't report your transgression and they void your warranty for exceeding the limit too soon. 'Course, we all know they wouldn't do that eh? But , then again, if the telemetry reports vehicle speed and miles on the odometer perhaps it's not that paranoid a thought after all?
My 05 had about 150 miles on the odo.
We were blasting through the Nevada desert at 150+
Have done the same with MANY sterre bikes and other Corvettes.
Never any problems
Between the Onstar Police, the C6 black box under the dash and the NSA, you're in BIG trouble. Right here in River City. Trouble with a capital "T"
And that rhymes with "P" and that stands for pool!

I just finished the break in of my new 08 Coupe, I did break the 55 MPH rule after 175 Miles, but i didn't break the WOT and 3.5k RPM rule until a little past 500. Damn do i love hearing that engine move!
The GM 500 mile break in period seems to be the standard with most of their cars. It certainly was in earlier vettes. I think there must be many advantages to following the break in procedure and I'm sure the auto engineers know best but then again maybe not?
what about the vette you test drive? do you only go under the 55mph limit, not me. I had that baby up to 65-70 mph. and how many others before me and after me have raced the engine in a test drive of that same car?. RPM range... shoot were talking 5000 RPM during test drive. So what does the dealership say about that.....they dont care, they know the car and engine can handle it.....Dont worry!
My bet is that the LS3 is broken in at the factory ... the 500 miles is for everything else ... tranny, gears, etc ...
Ever set in with the guy that's setting your computer at the factory? The speedo says about 80, but the wall is 10' in front of you. and then the computer sets the brakes. Wild little "ride", but it's not for an extended period. Only to set the systems in the car.
I only did 65, not like I've been abusing the car or something.
I bet there isn't one vet in 10,000 that is actually kept at 55 or lower for the first 500 miles. I bet there isn't one test drive ever that keeps it under 55.
Someone mentioned keeping it under 3500 rpm for 500 miles. Where is that in the owners manual? tks
It's not critical, just vary the speed and don't keep the RPMs constant for too long. I kept mine under 3K for the most part through 500 miles, tried to stay off of the freeway too. I think the main reason for break in is the trans and diff.

I had to take the freeway back home from where I picked up my car, and was at 75 a few minutes after driving it the first time, and maintained that speed for about 30 miles until getting off the freeway. It was not hurting the car imo, as I did not romp on it. 75 in 6th gear was not very high on the RPM range. I had to keep up with the flow of traffic...I would have been crushed by a big rig if I tried to drive on I-5 at 55 mph.
This was a 2006 C6 btw, but I don't think LS2 or LS3 makes any difference on break in procedure.

This subject has been talked to death. The break-in period is all about the rear end. Let its parts introduce themselves to each other gently and they'll serve you well for the rest of the life of the car. Abuse it and you'll have no one to blame but yourself. Sure you can yell "warranty!" if/when your rear end starts making awful noises when you back down the driveway in the morning. After the third lube treatment and second replacement set of clutch packs you might wish you'd been less rambunctious during those first couple of weeks. This endeth The Lesson.
