I was wondering if anyone out there changed their mufflers by removing the four hangers and sliding the mufflers down and back rather than disconnecting the intermediate pipes. Anyone? Thanks. - C.
I think that I read at one time that sombody had done that. The problem is that it's tough to just slip them off of the mid section pipe. You'll need to rock them side to side as you pull. The rocking motion can only be done by the mid pipe because of the lack of clearance that the mufflers have.

I just did my muffler swap and I can say that There was NO WAY I could get the mufflers out without taking the h pipe off.
The mufflers would need to slide foprward out of the h pipe and there is no room to slide them forward. My h pipe fought with me to come off too. It was a real tight fit. Once the h pipe was off and out of the car the mufflers twisted right out.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one to have that happen to.
After I posted my FYI last week I was waiting for some MacGyver type to tell me they did it in 10 minutes with only a chewing gum wrapper and a Swiss Army knife.

Same here. Too much up/down/left/right jockeying required to do without removing h-pipe.

Ditto here. Last Saturday I spend 3 hours trying to get the mufflers off my MN6 coupe without having to remove the H pipe. I finally gave up, and in 30 minutes had them off by removing the H pipe. Save yourself some grief and just take off the H pipe, then everything will come off easily.
I had a major muffler chain shop replace mine last week to a GM performance offroad system (double stacked mufflers). Boy am I glad I didn't attempt that myself! It took 2 of them - one to pull back and forth on the H-pipe that was dropped, and the other hanging onto the stock axle pipes. The job still took them an hour on the lift. Then it appears that the jockeying of the old and new over axle pipes knocked a connector loose on my trans, which gave me one BIG headache. Trans codes all over (05 A4 Z51), tranny felt like it was stuck in 4th, and it was overheating. We pushed all connectors back down and I went across the highway to the Chevy dealer where he was kind enough to reset the PCM. So far, so good. But watch where you move those pipes around! There's some expensive s--t back there!
My dealer installed my new Magnaflow for free and I told the mechanic how to do it.
1.- Loose the midpipe clamp.
2.- Take a sawzall and cut the muffler's pipe. (can be rewelded afterwards)
3.- Take off both mufflers. (piece of cake)
4.- Install new one's.
5.- Install pipes to connect between muffler and midpipe (H pipe).
6.- Install tips, align and torque all 6 clamps to 65 pounds.
7.- Done in 28 minutes.
They must work slower down there! (kidding) Meineke up here only charged me $75.00, their 1 hour rate. But to be honest, I would just have the dealer do it next time. Especially since they knocked a connector off of the trans while banging the pipes around.
