As there is a drain hole and a fill hole and the service manual calls for filling until fluid flows out of the fill hole, wouldn't it be hard to accidentally overfil?
I'm surprised that the Amsoil doesn't meet the GM spec?
I could be wrong, but I believe Amsoil does meet GM specs.
Yes... and when I drained mine it was very close to 2 qts of fluid not 1.69 qts. The original factory level was right at the fill hole because I made sure to check it. I simply put back in the same amount that came out.
You will know if it's over filled because some will come out the vent when it gets hot. Mine did that with the factory fill over a year after I drove home from the museum. I was on a long, hot fast trip and it came out the vent on top of the differential.
It's the little button on the top left. Many members thought they had a leak and it was only coming out the vent
These rear end problems are nothing compared to some of the trucks I've encountered with lockers, 39 inch tires, 10 inches of lift, used for rock crawling and towing. Amsoil is well known in that group of enthusiasts and thats what got me using all their products.
Some of those rears (Including mine) would turn Mobil 1 as dark as molasses, yet thin as melted butter in as little as 2000 miles. Chatter sounds 10 times as bad when you're running 39 inch tires. I ran my jeep near 30k miles up until I sold it and never heard another peep after Amsoil.
Others have had good results with Schaeffers 267 as well when used with a good friction modifier.
Since Amsoil isn't GM approved wouldn't it be hysterically funny if indeed it was the long term fix! I'd be happy if I could get 10,000 miles before having to change the fluid again.
The reason I ask is because I've owned at least 30 GM cars with posi and NONE of them ever made the noise my 06 Corvette posi makes.
Of those 30+ cars, 14 of them have been Corvettes.
Thanks
Tom
I believe GM has used 2 types of posi units. If I remember correctly one is clutch and the other is cone and both are anti-spin units. How they do their work however is very differently. I believe the cone type had few if any issues with noise. They also didn’t require special additives either. I’ve owned 8 vettes and 5 of them had posi noise of some sort. I believe the clanking noises associated with our C6 vettes posi units go back quite awhile now. Ask around on the C5 forum and I believe those folks have had the same issues. I don’t claim to be an expert on this subject just a backyard mechanic of sorts. I’ve had noise issues on other GM cars but all were some sort of muscle cars from camaro’s, Buick GS and Firebirds. Not every GM car had posi issues but some sure did. Posi noise (clutch chatter) has been pretty common for long to the best of my knowledge. Perhaps the experts can chime in shed some light here. Since you’ve owned so many GM cars without any posi problems I’d have to agree it sure hasn’t been an issue for you until the C6. I’m just hoping that changing the fluid will correct the problems I’ve experienced… at least for awhile…….
cthusker, great timing for this post. Mine has just started the noise and I can say that I too have had similar experiences with noise and chatter from my other, older Vettes.
I have used other aftermarket oils with the OEM additive and gotten good results.
I will be using the Amsoil for this one, now that I read your post.
