In the military we followed the rules and showed our respects to the military and the flag. That meant when not in uniform you were not supposed to salute now we may get that option again. For the Veterans who honor tradition this gives them back the ability to honor our flag and country with a proper salute, a military salute like we did while in uniform. Our men and women of the armed forces both past and present should be able to render the salute again to the flag of the country that they have had the honor of defending.
Military members have earned the right to render a proper salute and it really is simply a matter of tradition for military members that choose to uphold and honor that tradition. Under the UCMJ while out of uniform an active duty military member may not render a military salute to the flag (salute as defined as a had raised to the forehead or brim of the cap, not hand across the heart). A former military member may always place a hand over the heart but may not render a salute. Any civilian can place their hand over their heart. With all of that said, I don't suspect that their are any "salute police" that will have any input on it what-so-ever.
A lot of my family is/was military. I've spent most of my life on base. As a kid, it was a big thing for us to stop whatever we were doing to put our hand across our heart in respect for the lowering of the flag every evening. When I put on the uniform, it was with honor I saluted the flag, when I had a cover on (USN).
Now, with respect to tradition and the rules, I will only place my hand across my heart. With that being said, I will not criticize another person not in uniform for saluting the flag. At least they are showing the respect our flag and all it represents to which it deserves.
You guys are really going to wait on those idiots in Washington to tell you if you can salute our flag??? If people can burn it and not get in trouble you sure as hell can salute it. What in the hell is this country getting to???
Honestly what's going to happen if I salute the flag in my civies are the flag police going to come and get me ?
