When driving at night it appears the brightness of my gauges is not as bright as i'd like and significantly dimmer than it is during the day. I know there is a *** to the lower left of the steering wheel but when i hold this *** to the right the max brightness it achieves is not very bright, however when i drive from my covered garage to outside during the day i see that the gauges light up brighter. Is there any way to have this brighter interior display on at night? Am i missing something here?
The car automatically dims the interior lighting when the headlights are on. The assumption is that if the headlights are on, it is dark outside, making the interior lights appear brighter. Therefore the car automatically dims them for you. I don't mind the feature at all.

I doubt that it can be. I think the idea is that any brighter and it will seriously impair your night vision. It's far more important that you see what's in front of the car than what's inside it.

In my case it is quite dim compared to my wife's honda accord or my previous Infiniti G35
wow, im happy you posted this because i was going crazy looking through my owners manual last night trying to figure this out. The Nav and speedo were very bright and then all the sudden after about 10mins they dimmed and i tried brightening it with the **** but it wouldnt go as brite as it was , then i tried turning the headlights off but it did nothing, maybe someone knows better please chime in.
The dash instrument lights should NOT be bright. Just bright enough to read the instruments, otherwise (as pointed out) it impairs your outside night vision.

Well i'd rather them not be dim so that i cannot read them and thus have to keep my eyes off the road longer trying to read. The question is not whether or not it should be able to be adjusted but rather can it be.
lol i dont think its going to really impair anyones night vision , maybe the hud , my eye sights pretty decent at 25 yrs old....
I'm 26, maybe its a young person's issue only since we are used to sitting in front of bright LCD screen's etc we like to have the displays brighter...

Just to be clear i am referencing the backlighting of the gauges and not the interior lights. I want to increase the white backlight in my guages.
I was confused by this in the beginning but I think I have it figured out. I do not have the NAV unit but I do not think it makes a difference. I do not think the dash lights dim when the headlights are turned on unless the headlights go on automatically. I find it frustrating that when I think the headlights should go on, and manually turn them on, the lights are still in "day mode". When the little thingie on the top of the dash decides it is night, then the dash lights dim to the night setting. In my case I keep them very dim so the difference is dramatic. I'm pretty sure this is how it works but don't flame me, I'm not 100% sure. What I would like is for the lights to go into night mode when the headlights turn on even manually and another thing, there should be a visual indicator for the driver that the headlights are on, as there is with the running lights. Also the sensitivity of deciding when it is night should be adjustable.
I checked this out tonite on my '05 C6 and couldn't figure it out. The speedo lights go dim in night mode and bright during the daytime. I like a bright lit up dash also.
I do a lot of across country travel and drive a lot at night.
I wish the danged dash lights would go dimmer, not brighter.
When driving for long periods where it is truly dark - rural America West of the Mississippi for instance - the dimmest setting is not low enough after one's eyes adjust to the dark.
Wow, 18 responses and none with the answer! OK, here goes. Appropriately, the dash lighting dims when the car's ambient light sensor detects "darkness". (You already know that.) What hasn't yet been said here is that once the dash lights dim, their brightness can be adjusted. The procedure is not to turn the **** to the right and hold it, but to repeatedly turn it to the right and release it. The brightness will actually increase slightly with each release; I believe there are around 6 or 7 brightness levels.
