Loud noise then check engine light - ideas?
I started out for a nice cruise this morning and heard a loud crack, it seemed to have come from the windshield and I figured I picked up my first crack. So I pulled over. There was a spot on the windshield, maybe a falling chestnut, but it came off. Then when I restarted I noticed the check engine light was on, seems like more than a coincidence - I'm sure I would have noticed it if it was on earlier. I checked all the vital signs, tightened the gas cap, inspected the engine compartment, went throught the DIC, no problems, restarted a few time. Any ideas? Thanks! Looks like my first trip to the dealer - 5K+ miles.

So, is the MIL still on?
Do you have loss of power?
Any other symptom - smoke, clacking, other noises that are present, etc?
The more specifics you are able to give, the more useful help you can expect...

OK. Light is still on; no loss of power; no other noises or smoking, no leaking fluids, etc. All seems normal.

Here is your OBDII connector, just plugs right in:
Examples:
http://www.carmd.com/ (~$99.00)
http://www.actron.com/product_category.php?id=249 (~$69.00)
http://www.automotive-diagnostic-too...axr700-ast.htm ($75.00)

This could be anything from a bad 02 sensor to bad gas! It's not flashing so it's emissions related. It may time out in a few days or it may not.If you get black smoke out the back and a little rough idle at anytime,it's a sensor.

Thanks for the advice. I did go to AutoZone. He offered to let me use a reader, but I bought one - Actron CP9125. I had 2 occurances of P0455 which is "EVAP Emissions Control Leak - Large". Could this be the gas cap? At any rate I erased the codes and I'll see if it happens again.
PS I googled the code and sure enough a likely cause is a loose gas cap.
Thanks all for the help - at this point I'll just keep an eye on it. And the diagnostic tool is well worth the $60.

I had 125 miles on the tank at the time the light went on. I cleared the codes and went for a nice ride over the CT river and into eastern CT today, about 100 miles, and no complaints from the check engine light.
