Default Programming Key Fob

How do I match fob 1 to my car? I AM FOLLOWING THE PROCEDURES OUTLINED IN THE MANUAL TO THE LETTER AND NOTHING IS HAPPENING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!

(I'm not sure if that is the correct icon to voice my fustration. Wait, here we go: )

Anyhow, what do I need to do? I am on p 2-7 of my 2006 owner's manual The vehicle is OFF. No power to the car. I pop the glove box, stick the fob in with the buttons facing starboard (toward the passenger's door, as shown in the picture). Then I go to the back of the car, and put the key in, and turn it to open the trunk. Then I turn the key five times within five seconds. Nothing. No messages on the DIC at all.

And this is where I am. Any help would be gladly appreciated!!!

thanks!!!!

Several have reported problems with this procedure. I think one situation not mentioned in the manual is to be sure all other fobs are nowhere near the car. Some folks just had to try it several times before it worked. Probably wouldn't hurt to do a search for it. Check the C6 FAQ first.

Turning the key five times in five seconds is not easy. Make sure you are turning the key far enough and fast enough. Also, unless you are trying to erase all of the fobs don't put the fob in the box until told to.

I used the service manual's instructions to do mine. Also, there are a few different modes of programming the fob. I think the owners manual only shows one.

Assuming that you currently have 2 working fobs and a new 2008 fob that you now want to use as your No.1 fob, the following instructions may help:

Programming a new 2008 fob to replace your current working No. 1 fob:

A. Start your car.
B. With your car still running, take all of your working fobs and place them out of range from your car – preferably in the next county!
C. Shut engine off. (Note: If it is a manual transmission, put it in reverse before shutting off.)
D. Place the new, unprogrammed 2008 fob in the glove box transmitter pocket with the buttons facing towards the passenger’s side.
E. Go to the rear of the car and open the trunk with your car key.
F. With your trunk still open, and key still in the key cylinder, turn the key five times within five seconds.
G. The DIC message will display “OFF-ACCESSORY TO LEARN”. (Note: At this step or at any of the following steps, the DIC may display “NO FOBS DETECTED” – this is not uncommon and the process will still continue. Also, do not leave your car unattended during the entire 30+ minute procedure - - your car will time out and only General Goodwrench will be able to program your new fob!!)
H. Press the ACC button (ignition switch).
I. The DIC will read “WAIT 10 MINUTES” and will count down to zero, one minute at a time.
J. The DIC will then again display “OFF-ACCESSORY TO LEARN”.
K. Press the ACC button (ignition switch).
L. The DIC will read “WAIT 10 MINUTES” and will count down to zero, one minute at a time.
M. The DIC will once again display “OFF-ACCESSORY TO LEARN”.
N. Press the ACC button (ignition switch).
O. The DIC will read “WAIT 10 MINUTES” and will count down to zero, one minute at a time.
P. A beep will sound and the DIC will read “READY FOR FOB #1” (which is already in your glove box transmitter pocket). At this point, all previously working transmitters have been erased.
Q. Once your new 2008 fob is programmed, a beep will sound and the DIC will display “READY FOR FOB #2”. (Note: At this time you will want to quickly retrieve your originals fobs, which you placed far away from your car.)
R. Remove your programmed 2008 fob from the transmitter pocket and place your original No. 2 fob in the pocket.
S. When your No. 2 fob is programmed, a beep will sound and the DIC will display “READY FOR FOB # 3”. (Note: If you want to use your original No. 1 fob as a spare, you can now remove your programmed No. 2 fob from the transmitter pocket and place your original No. 1 fob in the pocket. This spare fob will be completely functional but will not have any personalizations associated with it.)
T. When the current fob is programmed, the DIC will now display “READY FOR FOB #4”. Although it is unlikely that you will have yet another fob to be used as a spare, remove the current fob from the transmitter pocket and insert your final fob in the pocket. (Note: This 4th fob, if you should have one, will also be completely functional but will not have any personalizations associated with it.)
U. When all of your fobs have been programmed, press the ACC button (ignition switch) to exit the program.

Good Luck!!!

No, it lists two, one for programming fobs 2, 3, and 4; one for programming fob #1 and erasing all others.

Indeed it is a manual!! Thanks for this tip. I always park my car in first -- it's a habit I gained since I used to park a prior manual-transmission car on a hill. I will put it in reverse before shutting the car off.

Facade-C6,

Thank you very much for your detailed reply!!! And thanks a lot to Jim and everyone else who has made a post. FYI, I am actually not trying to program an 08 fob, my 06 was only delivered with one (FOB #2), so the dealer gave me a FOB 1 off the shelf from another car.

I have a quick question:

(Note: At this time you will want to quickly retrieve your originals fobs, which you placed far away from your car.)>>

When the DIC says "READY FOR FOB #1", what exactly do I do next? Do I push the "OFF/ACC" button again? Do you simply push the button, or do you hold it for a certain number of seconds?

Also, how long do I have to go get the FOB #2 when I get the ready message? And can I open the car door to go do it, or will that time the process out?

Finally, are there any specific moves I don't want to make (such as accidentally pushing the start button or something) that would cause the process to time out while programming FOB 1 and leave me carless?

thanks!

You are very welcome!
These instructions will still work for your situation.

I have a quick question:

Actually, you don't do anything at this point. When it gives the message it will program the No. 1 fob without any action on your part.

Also, how long do I have to go get the FOB #2 when I get the ready message? And can I open the car door to go do it, or will that time the process out?
I can't say exactly, except do it as quickly as you can so that the car doesn't time out.
You can open the door during the process, if you wish.

Finally, are there any specific moves I don't want to make (such as accidentally pushing the start button or something) that would cause the process to time out while programming FOB 1 and leave me carless?
You certainly wouldn't want to push the ACC button when it's not called for. But basically, just follow the instructions as carefully as you can and hopefully you won't experience any problems.
Once again, good luck!!

Default FOB programing

I recently went through the same problem trying to program a new 2008 FOB for my 2007. I followed the instructions carefully and did it about a dozen times without any luck. I finally figured out what I was doing wrong. I inserted the FOB, then went to the rear of the car and turned the key five times, ran to the driver's seat and jumped in to press the ACC button. Nada. I tried it again but this time with the driver's side door closed. I had to open the door then jump in. That solved the problem. I left the driver's door open all the time figuring that I could then jump into the driver's seat ASAP but I guess the fact that the door was open caused a miscue in the programing process. So if you've been having problems, try it again but this time leave the door closed.

Default ah-ha!!! (maybe)

That's exactly what I was doing!!! I'll give this a shot with the doors closed tonight. If this turns out to be the issue, I will politely write GM a letter so that they either capture this important information that the next time they issue a revision to the owner's manual, or they change the PCM programming to not care about doors being open in this process.

I had the same issue. I found that if I started the car, shut it off, and then immediately began following the procedure, it worked fine.

I had a nasty experience with this yesterday. There are certainly some holes in the instructions from GM.

Good Luck!!!
I thank you very much for these instructions they worked great I jst bought and shipped an '06 vert from Tennessee to Calgary, Alberta and when I got it, it had two #1 FOBS, so with my wife at 5' 6" and myself at 6' 3", it was me who was not going to have the #2 settings and bite my knees every time i got in after her driving. Anyways these instructions worked great after a few hours of frustration with the manual. The only other tidbit I read that worked, it that if you have a manual tranny, stick it in reverse. I was also worried about locking myself out, so I left the door slightly ajar while doing this. Maybe paranoid, but I didn't want to have non active FOBS and after they had cleared...

Thanks again.

And, with all of the great instructions here on the forum, it still does not work, head for the dealer. My car could not even be programmed with the dealer computer methods from the service manual. After a day with GM tech, they had to order a new receiver for the car, which was replaced under warranty. So, I will personally affirm that not every car can be done, easily.

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I just tried the above and it works perfectly.

Here are my observations:
  • When the process is started (after step H.) you won't be able to open the door unless using the manual exit handle;
  • Once the programming is completed, you will have to exit using the manual door handle;
  • In order for the newly programmed Fobs to be recognized, I had to unlock the car using the unlock button on each new remote. After that, the passive lock/unlock worked.

Mike.

U. When all of your fobs have been programmed, press the ACC button (ignition switch) to exit the program.
