As far as I know none of the OEM navigation systems have memory card readers, so you can program your route on your PC where it is warm Or cool depending on your location. Instead of sitting in the car at 20 degrees fiddling with the ridiculous menus....Any thoughts

I guess that's one advantage of the OnStar nav system... just tell the operator where you want to go anytime while you're driving, and you can keep your eyes on the road.
You may also consider a portable unit, like a Garmin Nuvi, that you can program inside and then just stick it to your windshield/dash when you get in the car.

I agree with the suggestions, my brother has a Street Pilot and moves it from car to car, as for OnStar..I talk with enough people in a day.. ..My point is that the OEM Navs should have a memory card option and a mapping program for your PC.. everyone has a PC....to sit in the car and program it is a pain in the A$$...
I could not agree more that it is the weakness of factory navs. They are designed to put in a destination and take you there - the way they want you to go. I ride motorcycles for fun, and we are always programming routes in my Garmin and downloading them.
When I picked up my 08 Corvette at the museum, I wanted to take a rather complex route home. I actually programmed my route and downloaded it on my Garmin even though my car has factory Nav. I made a stab at programming the factory Nav the night I picked up the car, but it would have been impossible to plot the route. So I drove home with two Navs on in the car - the Garmin on top of the dash to follow the route.
My 05 coupe had the factory Nav. I liked it. My new 07 Z06 does not have the Nav. I got a Garmin 250w instead. I got to tell ya, it is light years ahead of any in dash unit I have used. I can take it inside as you mentioned, and program my route or look up a point of interest. Plus I can use it in other vehicles. It is way more user friendly than the factory Nav.
When I had my 05, it was the first Nav unit I had ever used. It was very cool. It took me awhile to figure it out, but after that it was second nature. Then I got a Nav unit in my 07 Escape hybrid. It is truly a POS!! It uses 10 CD's! You have to change the disc if you go over the line. I was in San Diego the other day and typed in Zoo under POI. It gave me the zoo in Merced, CA. The San Diego Zoo is the most famous zoo in the USA and it gave me Merced! Unbelievable! My Garmin gave me the San Diego Zoo right away. I wonder what the Corvette Nav would give me?
More food for thought: the GM updates cost $200, the Garmin updates cost $75. I'm sold on it as you can tell. Also the in dash 6 disc Bose system in the 07 sounds much better than my Nav system in the 05.

I suppose that is my point, for 2K they should make it equal to a unit you can get on Ebay for $300 and move from car to car...a memory card is such a simple fix.
I am not knocking Gm, same with Benz, BMW, Bentley for that matter.
It still does not solve the problem I mentioned in my post above. It is still only designed to take you from point A to point B.
Agreed, however you can ask them to load in ANY form of odd route you wish and the will do so. You can also do it while not taking your eyes off the road.
Factory Nav is certainly far from Perfect. Garmin a LOT better, and Onstar (IMHO) a tad better then that. With onstar you do not get the cool screen and map.
Unfortunatly None of them are the perfect solution.

I've had about six vehicles equiped with On-Star, and have never once used it, and will never pay for it. I don't for a minute believe that On-Star's guidance service is better than my Garmin. I've used it on several long trips - it's advantages go well beyond just coming on and telling me when to turn. I like actually being able to look at the map.

Forget about programming a route in the Garmin Nuvi. The only Nuvi that supports routes is the 700 series which isn't available yet.

I recently completed a survey sent to me by GM on the Nav system. At the end they asked for 3 suggestions. I used this for all 3: Please add the functionality to pre-program a trip on a PC or laptop and load it into the Nav via USB cable or memory card.
I've used Delorme software with the GPS attachment on a laptop for several years and it is a much better experience than the factory Nav.
