Default Check Engine light, Code 0430

I just so happened to be driving to the dealer today because they scratched up a plastic part and they wanted to see which it was to order a new one. While driving there the Check Engine light came on. I called onstar and said drive on the highway for 1 hour, if it doesn't clear then go to the dealer. Well I happened to get to the dealer and the rep asked onstar what the code was, it was 0430. It has to do with the catalytic converter. How could that have gone bad at 22K miles?

Now, I overfilled my oil, maybe .5 quarts, or at least I think. Depending on how you park the car on as level a place I can find it's either dead on full or about a cm above full. Could that have caused the issue? It's only been this way for about 1 month or 700 miles.

What's your thoughts?

No.

It's just a bad cat. Emissions related. Shouldn't have anything to do with overfilling the oil.

Take it in, shouldn't take much to replace it, if it doesn't solve itself.

Reset it by unplugging the battery for 15 minutes. If the same code returns then you passenger side cat has gone bad and it should still be under the emmision warranty

Shouldn't it reset itself if it's supposed to clear? According to Onstar they said to drive it and it should clear.

You may have a lean bank condition that has heated up the CAT and thrown the code. Or just a bad CAT.

And how exactly would this happen?

Are you sure its the CAT? It could be a BAD O2 sensor. Don't jump to conclusions just yet. I would do what they said above.....unplug the battery. It never hurts to reset thing any way. If it comes back on take it in and have the pull out a hand held computer and run a test (takes 5 seconds). From there they will tell you what's up.

No matter what it should be covered under your warranty.

I thought there was a specific code for an O2 sensor. Anyway. I have to brin it in for the bad piece of trim plastic. If it's a bad sensor they should figure it out when I bring it in. I was more concerned that I was doing some sort of damage by having the oil overfilled a bit, or so it would seem. It's so damned hard to tell what the level is in our car. For the first time I wonder if the digital oil level sensor that BMW uses isn't such a bad idea.
