Would the battery in the FOB key ever die?? If so, what would happen?? Reason im asking this is because my car doesn't seem to sense me around recently when im trying to open the door... and whenever i try to open the trunk with the key, it doesn't work... does this mean my battery is dead?? If so, how do i replace it and with what type of battery? Thanks!!
GM says average battery life of the fob is about 3 years. Be aware the symptoms you've mentioned also are symptoms of the car battery going dead. There have been reports of fob batteries not lasting 3 years, but keep an eye on your car battery as well.
Battery replacement for the fob is explained on page 2-9 of the 2005 owner's manual.
1. Insert a coin or similar object into the slot on the
back of the transmitter and gently pry apart the
front and back.
2. Gently pull the battery out of the transmitter.
3. Put the new battery in the transmitter, positive (+)
side down. Use a battery, type CR2032, or
equivalent.
4. Reassemble the transmitter. Make sure to put it
together so water will not get in.
5. Test the transmitter.
Just had the battery in my primary FOB die (2005 Coupe) with similar issues as described above. Replaced batteries in both FOBs so I don't have to worry for the next couple of years. I'll certainly replace both again in 2 years so I'm not caught dead again since the cost is virtually nothing and it's a quick, easy task!
The CR2032 is one of the most common sizes of batteries used for watches and calculators. Any place that has any watch batteries will have these like grocery stores and Wal Marts. They don't cost but a dollar or two.
One of my 05 fob batteries died in about a year. I bought a new one at Lowe's. The rear hatch works with the key and has nothing to do with the fob or car battery. Try a little graphite on the key or in the key slot.
From: Life ain't no dress rehearsal, are you gonna wait to get your toys til AFTER you have a heart attack?
Most Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Kroger and numerous other drug, retail and grocery stores stock the button type batteries. If you want to order over the internet, I have used both batteriesplus.com and batteries.com and was satisfied with both. You may even find a batteriesplus.com retail store near you.
Also, if you look closely (if it hasn't worn off) you may find the battery type you need on the back of the fob. The fob for my '06 shows it.
Seeing as how I am too lazy to look in OM, do you have to reprogram like the C5?
2006 owner's manual doesn't mention having to do that, so I doubt it, but maybe some who've had to replace fob batteries can chime in with first hand knowledge. Should be several here, since the 05s have now been out for 3 years.
The serial number of the fob is store in a nonvolatile rom inside the fob. The fob will never forget it's number assuming nothing drastic happens to it's circuits.
The Remote Control Door Lock Reciever (RCDLR module) in the car has the task of remembering the serial numbers of the fobs that have been learned.
