Actooly, that was one of my primary concerns. In person, the plate is very legible at its current angle, either from a distance, or standing close to the nose. If you are standing directly over the nose, the month/year stickers are hidden, but from just a couple steps away they are plainly visible. I have absolutely no concern about getting pinged for the current angle.

Thanks for the heads-up. I waited until after my clear film installation before mounting the plate, for just that reason.

The problem is, what's the alternatives??

- No way I'm going to stick it on the nose like the factory suggests.

- Not a snowball's chance of getting away with mounting the plate behind the grill in this area.

- I don't care for the billboard-plastered-on-the-nose look of the vertical plate mount that bridges the gap between the top and bottom of the grill opening.

- I don't want to drill holes in the fascia for the sliding/retractable mount.

I'm *really* open to other suggestions -- I'd drop this rig in a heartbeat if someone can point me to clean, no holes mount -- I'm there!

Longhorn -- I appreciate your comments -- how is your front plate mounted?

p.s. As for being cheap -- I have *no* problem putting out the $$ required to do something "right"; my reference to being cheap wasn't well stated; I was trying to convey that the price was just a side benefit in a world where there doesn't appear to be any acceptable solution among the vendor options, regardless of price.
As a retired "roaddog" my only other suggestion is have a valid bond card or cash handy for bond.

I very much appreciate the LEO perspective on this. I was surprised by your comment -- do you expect me to get tagged for having the plate at this angle? some other reason?

Thanks for the further input,
Mark

Just Google "Plate Flipper". You'll find quite a few for bikes and some for cars too. One guy at SEMA had an electric one flipping every 10 seconds, all day long. Although this would probably require drilling, it would be up in the "mouth" of the grille opening, not where visable. To get enough clearance for a hinged plate, the grille might have to be removed. This is not all bad, there are a lot of very tough-looking cars with no grille, from Cobras to ricers. No visable plate with no grille still looks better than a grille blocked by a big 'ol plate.

BTW, if you drive with no front plate, 80%-90% of LEO's won't notice. But if you mount it wrong, like behind the grille or way low down by the air dam, it will attract the attention of LEO's.

I live in a two plate state and the city I live in is where they hold Bloomington Gold--this is heaven for a LEO that has this as one of his/her pet peeves. There is a town in my area where they report all traffic offenses in the local rag. A month or so ago there was vette restorers meeting -- 32 Improper display/failure to display front plate tickets--second only to speeding. Displaying it with that angle is just ugly and if I was still on the job I would need to write you for contempt of vette. Just goofin with you. I hate the front plate also and have the Top Flight-keep it for driving-take it off for showing. SeeYa

There are no perfect solutions, but this is the best one by far, IMO:

Thanks for the compliment.Actually posted the pics quite a long time ago,but did not get much if any response,so i figured i would just pm you.The bracket is held on by the three bolts that hold the air dam doodad (you know the thing we all drag on our drives) to the frame. When i originally posted the pics there were concerns about ground clearance and high speed driving causing the plate to fold back from the wind resistance, but rest assured i have not had any problems on either .As an experienced fabricator i tend to over engineer everything i make.

OMG..... BUGS BUNNY. I rather deal with the possibility of a fine than that. Please remove, Can't you place it up on the dash and explain if necessary the plate fell off

I'm sorry for all your hard work but it doesn't work.

I'm in Texas where it is a law....and I'll pay the fine repeatedly before I put a plate on my car. Approx 34 years now.....zero tickets.

Running one on mine. Had to drill 3 ea. 1/8-inch holes on the underside of of bumper. Invisible without laying on your back.

Default Update

Last night after my local Corvette club meeting, on the way out I asked an LEO club member whether my plate mounting was legal for VA. His reaction was "Hell yeah! Looks pretty good, too."

He also said that with the problems locally with no front plates, the cops will be thrilled that I at least had one on. That tells me two things: (i) the local LEOs really are looking for front plate violations; and (ii) I should have nothing to worry about.

FWIW, I'm going to take a couple more pics to post, as I went back at looked at my original pic of the finished mount, and thought that the angle from which it was shot seems to overemphasize the Bugs Bunny look. In person, it really seems to fit in with the lines of the nose much better that the first pic suggests.

Don't get me wrong; not trying to change anyone's mind (IMO, having any plate at all is still major fugly!). Nonethless, I figured I'd post new pics because I haven't had enough CF "art critic" abuse yet!
