While showing my car to a friend yesterday he asked me what the box connected to the left side of the air snorkel was. I didn't know. Does anyone know what it is and what it's for? I am considering getting an aftermarket CAI and I haven't seen this on any for the 08.

It's a silencer.. to keep the air intake "roar" to a minimum
As was indicated the box is a Helmholtz resonator. It is designed to cancel standing waves and reduce noise. In this application it is to reduce the common noises associated with a free flowing intake system.
so, is there any possible adverse effect from removing this part? and if it is removed will the engine sound 'better' or just louder?
The part is molded onto the air-bridge.. so it would have to be cut-off and then covered to use the stock air bridge without the silencer. Can't comment on how it would sound.. but performance will not be affected.
