Sounds pretty normal. Cruise temp on my '08 (no Z51) was 198-200 with normal rises to the 214 level depending on traffic. A 160 Thermostat and fan retuning now has me at 183-185 cruise and a stabilized Traffic/Idle temp of abot 203...

same here. I will be replacing the stock thermostat with a 160 degree one in the spring as the engine temp is bound to go up significantly from there in the Texas summer heat.

The LS3 runs about 15 - 20 degrees above the LS2. Sounds about what mine is running. I wouldn't be concerned.

My 08 Z51 oil temp hit 223 deg recently in stop-and-go traffic on the expressway with outside temp of 60-65. Keeping the car moving in much hotter TX weather I never saw it go above 212.

Thats interesting, I guess the more HP the hotter it runs right?

I itstalled the 160 thermo without a tune and I now run (06 A6) 178 degrees highway (70 mph) and only 185-200 in traffic in the hot Florida sun, and thats without the a/c fan running

It sounds like the C4 gremlin is back! Two questions:

1. Any downside to the lower thermo - ie computer fuel settings, etc?
2. What is the coolant boiling point?

The only way that I found to cool down my C4 was with a better radiator.

I totally dissagree. My 08 runs about 196-198 in "normal" driving (cruising). My oil temp actually runs about 10-15 degrees cooler due to the new oil cooler.

Now, if ya'll are talking about when you are running a little harder, then I agree. The best way to compare is to go out on the highway and set the cruise to 70mph for 10 miles or so and see what it is. My coolant temp runs right at 196 or so in cruising - even in hot weather.

My 08 runs at 198 in normal driving. Are there any disadvantages to installing the 160 thermostat?

Pros and cons. If you go with a 160 t-stat then you should reprogram your cooling fans to come on at a lower temp. Otherwise, in stop and go traffic, it'll heat up just as it does with the 192 t-stat. Cooler temps mean slightly more horsepower. Personally, I am leaving mine stock. There are other reasons for the temps that GM has calculated other than just emissions.

The 07+ cars run a bit hotter out of the factory. It's for emissions regulations. Hotter engines tend to burn cleaner.

That seems on the warm side to me. If you are cruising (not stop and go) it should be around 195. You could have a bad thermostat, sending unit or gauge.

When driving home (California) from the Museum the coolant temp was 205 to 208. That's cruising at 70 to 75 mph in 100 degree heat (August). Around town I use the paddle shifter and keep the rpm's up a bit. My coolant temp runs in the 212 - 220 range.
