Default High Used C6 Availability?

I'm in the market for a toy. Boiled down to Cayman S or C6. Yes, I know they are two very different cars and each has its pluses and minuses.

Cayman S availability is good, particularly so since the recent mortgage issues hit home.

The availability of used C6s is phenomenal. There are literally hundreds available in my 200 mi radius and at pretty reasonable cost.

Question. Is there any reason for the high availability? Are people not happy with their cars or is this typical for used vettes?

put your location in your profile and you'll probably get a better answer . . .in this economy, there are always going to be toys on the market . ..the challenge is to find what you want at the right value.

Good luck -

I joined the Forum back in 2004 when I was looking for a Vette but my company sent me and the family to France for 18 months at the beginning of 2005. I'm now resettled in South Carolina with new house, furniture, landscaping, etc, etc.

So, my mid-life crisis was delayed a bit but I think for the better. The C6 is a great improvement over the C5.

Go get a nice used C6, you will love it. I used to own a 911 and I can't imagine the Cayman S having any pluses over the C6. The C6 is gobs faster, handles just as good or better, and gets better gas mileage.

Don't buy used when new prices are dropping like a rock. Get an 08 at an outrageous price. Current all model inventory is some 4400 + units and rising. That's well over 10% of annual sales. 944 Z06s in inventory right now...that's at least 25% of annual sales for that model. Outrageous!

Relatively high production numbers for the Vette (35k/year) combined with the legions of Corvette owners who buy a new one every couple/few years, and the real estate downturn (bye bye housing ATM), are all contributing factors. I'm always amazed by the number of Vette owners who are on their 2nd, or 3rd C6... Some people just have to have the latest and greatest... or new color!

Personally, I'm planning on keeping my C6 forever... I'll have to figure out how to add garage space when the C7's come out!

To answer your questions:

1. When the '08s came out with the new transmission, steering, etc, etc, it was the first major upgrade to the C6. Consequently, a lot of folks traded the earlier C6s in for the '08 which put a lot of them on the market. Then factor in the other issues mentioned above and many are out there. Remember this is now the 4th model year, so there's been tons of 'em made.

2. No, people are not so "unhappy" with them that they're dumping them, in fact, just the opposite IMO.

My 2006 Monterey Red coupe is for sale on the C6 for sale forum because I bought a 2007 convertible. There is nothing wrong with the coupe. I just decided I didn't need the trunk space and wanted a convertible. PM me is you are interested. Price is very competitive.

Bottom line the C6 is a better car, buy it, enjoy it, and be satisfied you have so many choices in your area, should make for a great deal.

I think the biggest reason for the high availability of used cars is that there are so many phenomenal deals on brand new ones.

A lot of vette owners trade up as soon as something better comes along. In this case the 08's.

To High Used C6 Availability?

The reason why there are so many used C6's on the market is complex.

1. As stated above, lots of C6 owners trade-in every couple of years, creating a glut of used C6's on the market. Porsche doesn't update its cars nearly as often, so a 4-year-old 911 will still be about the same car as a new one.
2. GM makes way too may C6's simply to keep the cost down - more production = lower per unit costs. But, that destroys the secondary market for Vettes - the depreciation, while better than a lot of other cars, is still huge, especially with so many good used ones available.
3. As mentioned earlier, the economy is going in the toilet, so a lot of people are starting to shed their toys to keep their houses. They shouldn't have been buying toys to begin with if they cannot afford to keep their house the second the economy goes south. But, that means you get a good deal.

Welcome home!

You might do a search on the Cayman S. There was a lengthy discussion about a month ago.

I weighed the two cars and bought the Vette. No regrets, in fact I am loving it. If you do,just look out for the mod monkey that will jump on your back.

Welcome home.

That's what I did. Some dealers are offering really amazing prices. I was looking at used 06s and 07s and ended up getting a new 08 for only a little more.
