As long as you haven't previously touched the paddles it will start in 1st. Every time. The ONLY way the car will start in second gear is while the paddles are engaged. If the paddles aren't engaged, no matter what, you will start in 1st gear if you have come to a complete stop. If the paddles are engaged, and you don't manually downshift to first, it will start in second, every time.
