Default Maintenance question

I have a new 07 C6 non-Z51, manual tranny. What is the normal life of the brake pads for regular, non-track driving? Do you have to replace the rotor everytime you replace the brake pads? And where and what usually you replace the pad with, OEM or aftermarket?

Thanks for the input

You should get at least 35-40 thousand miles on the stock pads. Unless the rotors are badly grooved they can be reused as is for the 2nd set of pads.

I have the 07 with F55 so our brakes are different - but not that much I suspect.

My factory brakes were (yes, were) awesome!! I could not live with dusting the wheels daily so I bought and installed GM ceramic pads from one of our fine forum vendors. Best money I've spent on the Vette so far. My wheels stay clean now and I still have way more plenty of stopping power.

I see no reason for these pads not to go 40 - 50k miles or further. If you keep an eye on pad wear and replace the pads before they eat into the rotors I would guess the rotors could be a lifetime part - driven nicely (wink - wink).

Even if you had to replace the rotors once to finish out the vehicle's life that is some very cheap fun - I think!!

It all depends on how you drive, but as in the previous post 40K should be about right if you don't drive the hell out of car.

I buy GM ceramic pads for my car because I don't like brake dust.

Brake pad life is highly dependent on your driving style. And no, you don't need to replace the rotors when you replace the pads.

So the original Brake Pads that comes with the vehicle is not "Ceramic"?

That's correct, and applies to both types of OEM pad compounds.

it all depends on how much stop and go, mostly highway, etc. in other words, type of driving. if it's mostly highway and you're easy on your brakes and it isn't stop and go of LA traffic, it could last anywhere from 25K-50K+ miles.

on older Vettes, I've seen rear pads last as little as 12K miles. and I've had some fronts on Vettes last in excess of 55K miles.

no rotors don't always have to be replaced when you do the pads altho some car mfrs do recommend it.

it is said by some that ceramics are good, but not as good at stopping repeatedly and keeping the same distances.

I've got 52k miles on my C6 now (recently put on new tires), and the brake pads still have about 2/3rds left. Typically, I get 120,000 to 140,000 miles on a set of brakes, but I do tend to brake later and harder with the Corvette than I do with my other cars and trucks, so I'm expecting I'll need brakes when I put on the next set of tires.

It all depends how you drive and what type of environment. We have some pretty good hills in Utah that will eat up your pads if you are not smart enough to use the lower gears going down.
