2022 C8 of the Year Finalist - Modified
2022 C7 of the Year Finalist - Unmodified
1. Sound quality from both are pretty abysmal compared to just about anything else, and from reviews I've read, they both achieve about the same quality. Those who say one sounds better than the other might just be experiencing the fact that some receivers are just better matched to certain head units. Whether or not they improve the bit rates or make them worse, I don't know.
Totally off topic, but had to laugh at your comment, and then I realized where you were located. I work for an engineering firm that specializes in airport design, and one of our clients is the Fort Smith Airport...actually have some Fort Smith drawings on my desk back at the office right now. Small world sometimes, huh?

Needless to say, I've had my Corvette for 13 days and can't stand XM. I planned on letting the three month trial expire, but I can't make it that long. XM just sucks. I ordered the GM-SIR 1 today direct from Sirius until I decide on which headunit I'm going to go with.
Thanks for the great writeup. The install looks like it's going to be a breeze!

Very easy installation just as described here. My antenna connection is looser than I'd like but I found you can gently squeeze the connector and it fits on the receiver better. Tried the heat shrink method but there was just not enough of the receiver connection sticking out to grab well. A bit of electrical tape (can't see it) and it works. I gave up a little reception I think but still worth it. I'll see if I can live with it. If not I'll try the supplied magnetic antenna.
Loving the Sirius over the XM in sound quality and choices.

My SIR-GM unit arrived via UPS yesterday. Total time of the install 8 minutes.
I definitely recommend adding some tape or other adhesive to keep the antenna in place. I spent more time on the phone with Sirius than it took to take out my second top, set it aside, jump in the back of my car and to complete the install.
Thanks again for the great write up!
Cheers-

Thanks for posting this thread. I just bought the SIR-GM1 today and installed it in a couple of minutes. Sounds much better then the XM, I should have done this months ago. One thing of note, I have an IConnect from Smart Park that I used to run my Ipod through the XM tuner. It also works with the Sirius tuner and I think even the Ipod sounds better now.

I just ordered mine. I can't wait to get it installed. I called XM just moments ago and cancelled my subscription. The first words out of their mouth were "We can offer you a year at $77", to which I said "No Thanks"
My wife got a year of Sirius in her new Dodge Nitro R/T. I'll activate mine at $6.99 a month.
Thanks for the write up, it made up my mind to do it.

Installed mine over a year ago on my 05 and it has worked great until this am. Today - no Sirius, no XM button on the NAV screen which I interpret as getting no signal from the unit. I checked and cables were still attached and tight (at least at the SIR-GM1 end.
Is there a fuse that might affect this? All other functions in radio/ nav seem to work fine.
Other option might be that the SIR-GM1 died.
I think I plug the XM module back in and see if XM shows up on the screen - if so then the Sirius must be dead - if not then?
Any ideas or other thoughts.
Thanks,

From what I understand, nothing happens. The merger is still in the works and not finalized. Still might not ever happen. If it does though, all equipment from both XM & Sirius will continue to work. Channel packages to allow you to purchase only what you want is pretyy much the only big change. This merger has been being discussed/worked out for close to 2 years now and still is not final. Buy the XM to Sirius conversion and enjoy now!

i agree- the XM audio sux...although I have heard that the problem is the xm receiver module and not the actual broadcast.....people tell me it is the head unit and I call BS because the FM radio and MP3 player both sound awesome compared to the XM sound
